Madame Delaroche (wife of one of the most popular French artists, Paul Delaroche) was the daughter of Mr. Vernet, and was a woman of rare beauty and accomplishments, the idol of her husband, and an ever-sympathetic companion and helper in all his work. She was an admirable and charming hostess, and was the centre of a brilliant and extensive circle of friends, who delighted to gather at the painter's home Himself prone to reserve and despondency, Delaroche owed much to her influence, and when, after ten years of most happy married life, she died, the loss was felt by him to be irreparable.
