Howdy folks,
Here is a 1956 vintage Gibson ES-5 Switchmaster 3 pickup archtop electric
guitar
SN# A22414. Body
size at lower bout: 17", Scale length: 25 1/2" Nut: 1 11/16"
Finish: Original sunburst
finish, nitrocellulose lacquer type.
Materials: Flamed arched maple body; solid tiger flame maple neck with walnut
centerstripe; L-5 style Brazilian rosewood fingerboard with block mother of
pearl inlays and pointed finial; quintuple bound body with bound neck and
headstock.
Hardware: All original
hardware includes triple P-90 pickups; beveled 5-ply pickguard; gold trapeze
tailpiece; gold Kluson Super 'waffleback' tuners with single-ring tulip keys;
wood compensated bass and bridge; gold bonnet volume and tone knobs; 4
way pickup selector switch. Top hat switch tip.
General notes: Introduced
in 1949, the triple pickup ES-5 was the most versatile electric guitar Gibson
ever produced. In late 1955, the guitar was renamed the Switchmaster, fitted
with separate volume and tone controls for each pickup and a unique 4 way
selector switch on the lower bout. This guitar is from the last full year for
the traditional parallelogram tailpiece, and the classic P-90 single coil
pickups. It appears as if this guitar was actually delivered in 1957, which
would not have been unusual for a low production, special order guitar.
This particular example
presents the original finish with nice fading and no overspray or repairs;
Original hardware, original pots with bumblebee caps etc are in place.
The gold plating has almost disappeared entirely from the trapeze style
tail piece. Brazilian board and inlays are perfect. Original frets show
significant wear, and are probably good for one more level. Neck shows some
play wear finish rub through in the first position. Binding on neck and
body are intact and solid. Selector switch, pots, pickups etc. all are working
perfectly. This example does have the wood compensating tail piece which
may not have been the original type. The "G" string tuner is bent. It
is missing the pickguard attachment bracket. Do not know if the top selector
switch tip is original. Orange label is solidly affixed inside the body. The
guitar will arrive in the original deluxe brown Gibson hardshell case which is
in good condition. Please call with any questions or an in hand
description. The guitar weighs 7.15 pounds. This is a consignment and not
eligible for return.

Showcase strives to accurately document and describe each piece we list, we can
only accept responsibility for what we detail in the listing and what is
visible in the photos. Guitar Showcase is eager to verify any additional
details necessary to address any concerns you may have: just make sure to
contact us with any questions you may have before bidding or buying. Beyond this, Guitar Showcase
can offer no guarantee and can accept no returns on Used or Vintage gear.

high priced Vintage instruments, we highly recommend that you either have a
local friend try the Instrument or come in and try it in person.
