Jerrold was an English journalist and author. , Gustave Dore - "Paul" Gustave Doré was a French artist, engraver, illustrator and sculptor. Doré worked primarily with wood engraving. Width: 12.25" Height: 15.25", 18lbs. Gilt edges. Deluxe binding. "London: A Pilgrimage," with 180 engravings, was published in 1872. It enjoyed commercial and popular success, but the work was disliked by many contemporary critics. Some of these critics were concerned with the fact that Dore appeared to focus on the poverty that existed in parts of London. Dore was accused by The Art Journal of "inventing rather than copying." "The Westminster Review" claimed that "Dore gives us sketches in which the commonest, the vulgarest external features are set down." The book was a financial success, however, and Dore received commissions from other British publishers.
Bound in full red leather, with gilt decoration on the covers and spine. Gilt lettering is stamped on two black spine labels. The exteriors exhibit rubbing and edge wear. Full red leather [morocco]. The text blocks are adorned with gilt edges and marbled endpapers. The front board of the second volume is almost detached. The binding of the first volume is sound. The pages exhibit mild aging and scattered faint smudging.
This work is richly illustrated by Dore. 180 ill. Woodcuts. 126 vignettes in the text. His night scenes on the Thames, the people, the teeming Docks and some strange streets are the most impressive. "Dore’s devastating realization of the contrast of wealth and poverty in a modern metropolis makes London one of the great illustrated books of the world. " Ray.
