The Syrian Democratic Forces (Arabic: قوات سوريا الديمقراطية‎, translit. Quwwāt Sūriyā al-Dīmuqrāṭīya‎, Kurdish: Hêzên Sûriya Demokratîk‎, Syriac: ܚܝܠܘܬܐ ܕܣܘܪܝܐ ܕܝܡܩܪܛܝܬܐ‎, translit. Ḥaylawotho d'Suriya Demoqraṭoyto), commonly abbreviated as SDF or QSD, are a multi-ethnic and multi-religious alliance of Kurdish, Arab, Assyrian, Armenian, Turkmen, Circassian and Chechen militias in the Syrian Civil War. The SDF is dominated in manpower and militarily led by the People's Protection Units (YPG), a mostly Kurdish militia. Founded in October 2015, the SDF states its mission as fighting to create a secular, democratic and federal Syria, along the lines of the Rojava Revolution in northern Syria. The updated December 2016 constitution of the Democratic Federal System of Northern Syrianames the SDF as its official defence force. The prime opponents of the SDF and their allies are the Salafist and Islamic fundamentalist groups involved in the civil war, in particular the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), Turkey-backed Syrian opposition groups, al-Qaeda affiliates and their allies. The SDF has focused primarily on ISIL,[95] successfully driving them from important strategic areas, such as Al-Hawl, Shaddadi,[96] Tishrin Dam and Manbij. 

The Raqqa campaign (codenamed Operation Wrath of Euphrates), is an ongoing military operation launched by the Syrian Democratic Forces against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant(ISIL) in the Raqqa Governorate, with the goal of isolating and eventually capturing the Islamic State's capital city, Raqqa. Another one of the main goals is to capture the Tabqa Dam, the nearby city of Al-Thawrah,[83] and the Baath Dam further downstream.[84] The offensive has also been dubbed the Battle to End All Battles in the War on ISIL. The offensive is concurrent with the Battle of al-Bab in the Aleppo governorate, the Battle of Mosul in Iraq, the Battle of Sirte (2016) in Libya, the Palmyra offensive (2017), and a reignition of fightingin Deir ez-Zor's siege.

Forces of the Brave (Arabic: Quwwat al-Sanadid قوات الصناديد/Jaysh al-Sanadid جيش الصناديد‎‎) is a militia formed by the Arab Shammar tribe to fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. The tribe, with strongholds in Al-Yaarubiyah and Tell Hamis in Cizîr Canton of Rojava as well as in Iraq. The red colour in their flag represents blood while the yellow represents the light, calling themselves “marchers on the red death”. 

The al-Sanadid Forces primarily want to ensure the Shammar tribe's autonomy and security in the Al-Hasakah Governorate; furthermore, they have pledged to fight Wahhabism. Humaydi Daham al-Hadi has also expressed his ambition to facilitate the breakup of Saudi Arabia, likely to retake the former Emirate of Jabal Shammarfrom the House of Saud. Furthermore, they neither support or oppose the Syrian Ba'ath regime. The Shammar tribe generally maintains a long cooperative relationship with the Syrian Kurds since the 18th century, despite a number of tribal disputes. In course of the 2004 al-Qamishli riots, the Shammar under Bandar al-Humaydi were the only tribe in Al-Hasakah Governorate that refused to fight the Kurdish protestors for the government. As result, when the al-Sanadid Forces were formed, they were set up as explicitly pro-Kurdish. Humaydi Daham al-Hadi and his son both repeatedly expressed loyalty to and support for the Kurdish forces.[ The Al-Sanadid Forces are affiliated with the co-governor of Jazira Canton and tribal leader Humaydi Daham al-Hadi, and are led by Humaydi's son Bandar al-Humaydi. The al-Shaddadi offensive (2016), also known as Operation Wrath of Khabur, was an offensive launched by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) during the Syrian Civil War, in February 2016. The main goal of this offensive was to capture the strategic city of Al-Shaddadi and the remainder of the southern al-Hasakah Governorate from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). During the offensive, the US-led coalition conducted more than 86 airstrikes in Al-Shaddadi and the nearby areas, in support of the SDF advances.
