G.W. Green, Urban Forester/Sawyer

I’m located in Northern Indiana, directly in the heart of the Central Hardwood Forest, known for its great diversity of hardwood trees (188 native and introduced species). My business is obtaining logs from unwanted trees; yard trees, highway projects, storm damage, etc., and producing high-grade kiln-dried hardwood and softwood lumber.  Mine is a home-based business utilizing a Wood-Mizer portable bandsaw mill and three solar-powered drying kilns.  Most of my lumber is sold primarily to building contractors, smaller production shops and amateur woodworkers.  For my full story find my website woodsbygwgreen

 Table leg blanks, turning squares

PART OF THE SQUARES PREPARED IN THE 2010 SEASON

WALNUT SQUARES

CHERRY SQUARES

One of my very popular products is table leg blanks.  These are cut on the sawmill to about 3 x 3” x 8’ or more then placed in the kiln to dry for a matter of about 6 – 9 months.  They must be dried slowly to prevent splitting and internal checking.  During the drying process they can develop some unusual warp and sometimes a bit of twist and they will most certainly shrink – sometimes as much as 1/8” in one direction.  They will also sometimes dry into a parallelogram shape as opposed to a perfect square.  With all of this said they will almost always finish to a perfect 2-1/2” square or turn to a 2-1/2” cylinder.

These are rough-sawn on four sides and are relatively straight, cut to about 31” long.  Ready to taper, turn, or use as-is with some additional surfacing or sanding.  Please note that the grain may not run perfectly straight along the length and will most likely not be absolutely perpendicular to the face.  In fact the grain might be running completely diagonal to the face.  I’ve been asked to ship only quartersawn blanks.  This is impossible as a true quartersawn blank would be quarter-sawn on two faces and flat-sawn on the other two.  I can surface these on four sides for $20 per set.  Please note this when making payment as well as the desired size - 2-1/2" maximum.

You will not be receiving the blanks shown in the photos.  I pulled the top four 31" pieces off the top of the stack for the photos.  The photos are representative of what you will receive and I have a photo of all four sides and one of the end grain.  This should give you a very good idea of what to expect.

The above photos are of the 2010 blanks.  These were a very popular eBay item with about 750 pieces sold in just over two months.  So, I stepped up production and sold 1500 last year and have added two species.  I now have nearly 2500 available.  I'm now offering red oak, white oak, poplar, hickory, walnut, ash (certified free of emerald ash borer), cherry and hard maple.  Lengths available are 31, 24, 18 and 12".  Seconds are also available in most species in most lengths.  Check my other listings to find the blanks you want!  Sorry, nothing larger than 3" or longer than 31 is available.

 You are buying Four 3 x 3 x 24” first quality

Walnut

These are nice dark heartwood blanks with little to no sapwood.

Shipping weight is 21 pounds.  Yes, these are heavy and quite often UPS Ground costs more than the blanks, depending on your location.  If you were to purchase a bunch of these squares I could provide a price for shipping freight.  Let me know what you'd be interested in buying with your zip code and I'll get an exact quote.  Combined with shipping 100 board feet of lumber, the addition of several legs will add little to the cost of the freight.
