SIMULTANEOUS OPERATION OF TRAFFICATORS AND FLASHERS OFF ONE TURN-SWITCH AND MORE.
Many of my
parts and ideas are now being sold as I will soon no longer be selling trafficators. To use
a quaint expression, the arse has dropped out the market. Sadly, trafficators are no longer viable;
whereas repro items are.
Which is
a shame as all that knowledge on Lucas traffs etc will go to waste… oh well… c’est le guerre
Many
people driving their car regularly on the road want to keep their trafficators,
which is a fabulously fun feature of vintage… but also want the safety of
flashing modern lights. Turning right
(or left USA) is a dangerous manoeuver with just trafficators… and you’re
likely to be rear-ended… or worse… T-boned in an overtake as you turn (T-bone… they cannot understand why you are just “sitting”
there in the road, as no one looks at the side of the car for some tiny dim
pointer, so they impatiently overtake, just as you turn… I personally nearly
lost my life forty years ago when exactly that happened…)
Having
the two systems operate simultaneously off the one switch would give you the
best of both worlds. But one is constant
and one is an intermittent pulse… a square-wave.
This
then, is the easy way to achieve this dual operation. No “two switches” which is about the silliest
idea I’ve ever seen… who uses two switches every time you turn a corner???
In
addition you get notes on SD84 dash-switches and how the two types of SD84 vary
and the wiring associated with that. Eg Morris Minor, A30 , Landrover. Ignore
if not required.
Also many
diagrams on steering wheel-switches and how to apply the idea to them eg Devon
A40
The idea
is simple but I go into a lot of detail to cover every skill level.
Also how
to wire a “freeway” or “passenger” switch. This kills the trafficators so only
flashers work.
Why? FREEWAY. Over 80kph the traffs tend to not drop back
properly, so you can cut them till later. The flashers keep working. PASSENGER.
If you have a passenger, you also may wish to turn them off before the
following happens… and it does a lot!!
As a modern driver, when you drop
a passenger at the kerb, you leave your indicators on… it is habit… the
passenger gets out… SNAP… end of trafficator.
Turn them off right at the start of the trip, but keep the flashers…
then you won’t forget.
If you
see this listing, and decide you want to ADD flashers… and use this idea… then see
my items on 488 and 594 red, amber,
clear glass lights. Note these lights
can also be underslung on a panel under the bumper… if you’re not keen on
cutting holes in your car.
Also a little
bit on diode-theory and how it can help with vintage turn-switches etc using
the more difficult one-dash-light system (remember a modern car has two lights
on your dash, one for right, one for left!!)… a 5 cent diode can make your life
so-o-o much easier!!
This is
sent by mail and is all hand-written and drawn. I can answer questions too
post-purchase as best I can, given the obvious limitations of not being at your
car!!!
To look for items in my shop, it is easiest to look in the yellow box of "shop categories". Select the category of interest and all items in that category will appear. It is much easier than keywords. Alternatively, if it is not showing, then select “visit store” at the top right (NOT “see other items” !!!) and the yellow box will be there
For example "BRAKE" or
"TRAFFICATOR parts" or "LIGHTS" or
"AXLES" or "COOLING" etc
etc
