Fundraising Poster Stamp

Poster stamp type receipt issued by Mændenes Hjem, the Mission to Homeless Men, in København. Mændenes Hjem was founded by Napoleon Bang on October 25, 1893, when he held the first of many "Homeless Men" meetings in a basement room under Bethseda, Indre Mission's house in Rømersgade. For the meetings, hungry and abandoned men received warmth and food, after which there was a worship service. There was some turmoil in the group when the Indre Mission wanted to take in Bang's group as part of their own. (Indre Mission, or "Kirkelig Forening for den Indre Mission i Danmark", (Church Association for the Internal Mission in Denmark) was founded on September 13, 1861). Eventually, in 1898, Mændenes Hjem was organized as a separate group. The new association got the impressive name "The Mission among Homeless Men in Copenhagen", a name that clearly described its work.

This stamp was issued as a fundraiser in 1918, on the 25th anniversary of Bang's first meeting. The stamp was printed in sheets of 20 (5 x 4) and is known with both light blue and dark blue sky. The sheets have no selvage, so 14 stamps in each sheet will have either one or two straight edges, and 6 stamps will have perforations on all four sides.

The image on the stamp depicts the story of the Good Samaritan. There are some Bible passages around the border and in the tablet at the bottom of the stamp. The text reads:
"A man was set upon by robbers. They stripped him, beat him, and left him half dead. A Priest and a Levite felt sorry for him - but passed him by - the Samaritan was truly compassionate and helped him. Will you do the same thing?"
There is also a denomination of 25 øre. The back of the stamp has the following text:
"The homeless man is unhappy and suffers physical and spiritual distress. Do you want to be like the merciful Samaritan? It is your brother, our own country's children, who have fallen into the hands of robbers. Let us pray to Jesus, who has been merciful to us, that he will show us the way."
There is also the address of the organization, and the denomination 25 øre. I believe that this stamp was issued without gum, intended more as a donation receipt than as a stamp to be affixed to something.

After 35+ years I decided to retire from being an active Cinderella Stamp dealer. Most of my working inventory plus backup stock was sold at public auction. However, I have retained some material that I will be offering for sale. In addition, I have some "new" material that was mixed into lots I have bought for my own collections. I will be listing some of the material in my eBay store at fixed prices. I will also be offering some material at auction, either as single items or mixed lots. There will be many bargains available. There will be large and small lots, some containing similar material, some containing a random mixture, and some containing only one or a few items. The condition will be mixed, but none of the lots will be just accumulations of damaged or faulty stamps (unless specifically listed as such).

Items in stockpage or larger lots may be removed and repackaged into glassines to save on shipping costs.

A Note about Poster Stamps and Gum: Because many poster stamp collectors are primarily interested in the image on the stamp, the absence or presence of gum on the back is of little concern. If no mention of gum is made, then there may or may not be gum present. If you are only interested in poster stamps with original gum, please inquire before bidding. Actual condition issues (that are not apparent from the scan) WILL be described.

* A Note about "Stock Images": Occasionally I will have more than one example of an item in inventory. Rather than scan each one individually, I may use the same image for multiple examples of the item. If that is the case, the item supplied will be in substantially the same, or better, condition than the image. Any such items will have the words: "STOCK IMAGE" at the end of the description.
