Welcome to Antiques & Moore!

This listing is for a lovely antique Chinese natural agate snuff bottle with russet striations in the stone. The bottle has a nice smooth exterior and is believed to date to the late Qing Dynasty period but please be your own judge regarding age. Bottle sits on a flat oval low base (no foot ring).

Measures 2 1/4" high (to top of bottle), 2 3/4" high (to top of stopper) with is 1 5/8" wide. Weighs 1.7 ounces.

This nice bottle is in excellent Estate condition with no noted flaws to the bottle although the spoon is missing and the remaining spoon attachment to stopper may not be original.

 HISTORY:

DURING THE 17th CENTURY, THE TAKING OF SNUFF BECAME A POPULAR CHINESE PRACTICE. ALTHOUGH IT WAS NOT ACCEPTABLE FOR THE CHINESE TO SMOKE TOBACCO, SNUFF WAS CONSIDERED MEDICINAL. ACCORDINGLY, THE SNUFF BOTTLE DEVELOPED IN THE LATTER PART OF THE CENTURY AND WAS BASED ON THE CONCEPTS OF THE CHINESE MEDICINE BOTTLES (YAO PING).

IN THE LATE 19th CENTURY, THE SNUFF BOTTLE BECAME A CABINET BOTTLE AND PURCHASED FOR COLLECTING PURPOSES. MANY OF THESE CABINET BOTTLES WERE NOT WELL HOLLOWED. AT THE SAME TIME, MOTIFS WERE MORE FLAMBOYANT.
