WHAT HAS CAUSED MY POWER TRANSFER UNIT / TRANSFER BOX / FRONT  DIFFERENTIAL TO BE DAMAGED?

In most cases damage to your power transfer unit / transfer box / front differential is caused by mismatched tyres.

It is very important on a Volvo XC60 XC70 XC90 V70 Drivetrain for the tyre sizes to be matched between the front and rear axles. The difference in tyre diameter, and thus the rolling radius of the wheel, causes slippage in the drivetrain, which is what they are designed to do off road if the wheels start to slip and this transfers drive to the other wheels, but as this is happening while driving in a straight line on a road it causes extra load to the entire transmission line, eventually resulting in Rear Differential and / or Power Transfer Unit failure. This constant strain can also affect the Haldex unit and gearbox if the situation continues.

Mismatched tyres can occur from fitting different size profile tyres to the front of the car compared to the rear; putting new tyres on one end of the car but leaving the old worn tyres on the other or low tyre pressures and vehicles that have done a lot of towing (rolling radius of tyre is less due to the weight of the trailer compressing the tyres). A difference of just 5mm in diameter dramatically increases the rotational differences between the front and rear axles, so it is imperative that the tyres are always matched. Always change all 4 tyres at the same time, rather than trying to save a few pounds by changing the fronts and getting a few more miles out of the rears. The variations between makes of tyres with the same profile can be even more than this, so tyre makes should also be matched.

HOW CAN I TELL IF MY POWER TRANSFER UNIT / TRANSFER BOX / FRONT DIFFERENTIAL NEEDS REPLACING?

A problem with the Volvo XC60 XC70 XC90 V70 power transfer unit / transfer box / front differential can show itself in two different ways. 
1. You may hear a whining noise from the front of your Volvo XC60 XC70 XC90 V70, a little like road noise, which tends to get louder when you place the Volvo XC60 XC70 XC90 V70 under load, such as when you are accelerating - this is the most common symptom.
2. You lose the four wheel drive, so when you need grip the front wheels start spinning and you just skid around, rather than get out of that muddy field - this could also occur if you have a problem with your rear differential or Haldex.

Warning: If your power transfer unit failed because of mismatched tyres then you will need to replace your tyres, otherwise you will damage your replacement power transfer unitl all over again - and your warranty will not cover you because it will have been damaged by an external component!

WHAT IS A RECONDITIONED POWER TRANSFER UNIT / TRANSFER BOX / FRONT DIFFERENTIAL?

Our reconditioned power transfer unit / transfer box / front differential have been fully dismantled, cleaned, inspected and fitted with all new bearings, and seals. 

PLEASE NOTE: If the there is damage to other parts of the unit, other than the bearings and the seals, your power transfer unit / transfer box / front differential will not be suitable for reconditioning. In this instance we should be able to supply a replacement core unit to recondition, however this will incur a £300 surcharge.
Everything in the unit is inspected and tested to ensure it is fully functional and worthy of our unlimited mileage 24 month warranty.

SHOULD I CHANGE MY TYRES?

The most likely cause of power transfer unit / transfer box / front differential damage is a mismatch in tyres. If you do not address this issue you will experience the same damage all over again.

We generally recondition your existing power transfer unit / transfer box / front differential - this ensures you have the correct unit for your vehicle. We will arrange the courier to collect your unit. UK shipping is 1 day, we aim to recondition your unit in one day and return it back to you on next day courier - so our aim is to have your unit reconditioned and back to you within 3 working days. EU shipping is generally 2 - 5 days each way. For the rest of the World please contact us with your location for a shipping schedule.

DO I NEED TO RETURN MY DAMAGED POWER TRANSFER UNIT / TRANSFER BOX / FRONT DIFFERENTIAL TO YOU?

Generally we will recondition your existing unit (provided it is in a reconditionable state and does not have damage to the shafts - if damage exists and the unit is not reconditionable we should be able to supply a core unit at a surcharge of £300).

The shipping costs include the cost of shipping your damaged power transfer unit / transfer box / front differential to us, and returning it to you once it has been reconditioned. We will organise the courier, all you have to do is tell us when it will be ready to be collected.

Yes we do. The following shipping prices include shipping your damaged power transfer unit / transfer box / front differential from you to our workshops, and returning it, reconditioned, from our workshops to you:
  • UK Shipping £35
  • European Shipping £95 (estimate - see below*)
  • For the rest of the World the shipping costs include the shipping cost, the non-return surcharge (as it is not economically feasible to ship the old units back to us from outside of Europe) and the deduction of the VAT on the unit. The shipping prices are:

Our warranty covers you for a replacement power transfer unit / transfer box / front differential in the event of any failure of a component due to faulty parts or workmanship.

IMPORTANT: Because it is common that damage to the power transfer unit / transfer box / front differential is caused by mismatched tyres, your warranty will only be valid if your tyres are matched.

Payment

All of our units / work come with a 24 month return to base warranty against defective parts or poor workmanship. If you have a problem with any of our products or work please do not hesitate to contact us, we want happy customers and will do our best to sort things out.

We aim to ship out stock items within 1 working day whenever possible.

For drivetrain units which are reconditioned to order we aim to ship within 1 to 3 working days whenever possible.

For reconditioned engines, we always recondition these to order and the process takes approximately 2 weeks.

About Us

We are FreelanderSpecialist. As the name suggests, we specialise in Land Rover Freelander's, both the Freelander 1 and the Freelander 2.

We specialise in reconditioning the drivetrain units and the engines for all Freelanders. We also carry out repairs and servicing.

Since the Freelander engines and drivetrains are used in some other makes of vehicles (for example the Rover, MG, Lotus, Volvo and Range Rover Evoque) we also recondition units for these vehicles.

We have been working on (almost) nothing but Freelander's for so many years now we like to think we are pretty good at it! So if you have any issue with your Freelander that you would like discuss please do not hesitate to contact us.

The garage could not get the old prop apart so I took it back to freelanderspecialist.com they fitted it for me.
