This
luminous painting done on oil on canvas highlights a procession of
horse-drawn carriages filled with joyful Russian peasants in colorful
folk costume as they ride through the snow-filled winter countryside.
The rendering of late afternoon sunlight with dappled tints reflected in
the snow is particularly accomplished. This type of genre scene is
representative of the Bulgarian-born Russian painter, Petr Constantine
Stojanov (1857-1957), known for his depictions of the Russian
countryside as well as historical scenes. Signed "C. Stojanow" at lower
right. The gilded wood frame is typical of the period. Painting is in good condition.
Size: 31" x 23" (78.7 cm x 58.4 cm) 34" x 26" (86.4 cm x 66.0 cm) framed
Stojanow studied at Saint Petersburg Academy of Arts (1887-1894)
