This mint family perennial flower (Monarda fistulosa), also known as Wild Bergamot flower, Lavender Bergamot, Horsemint wildflower, or most commonly Bee-balm Bee Balm grows delicate crown-shaped pale pastel purple flowers and foliage with a scent reminiscent of bergamot citrus. Flowers are very attractive to bees, butterflies, hummingbirds and other native birds. Although this aromatic plant is part of the mint family you will also smell hints of lemon & citrus in it's beautiful blooms since they are dotted with tiny glands that secrete aromatic oils.. Bee Balm is a perennial that grows from creeping rhizomes, but doesn't aggressively spread. Its beautiful shaggy lavender (sometimes pink) flowers distinguish this plant from many others. Much like Thyme, bee balm is a drought-resistant edible plant that actually prefers dry, sunny locations...watch out because this means it can quickly develop mildew if it is growing in overly moist conditions. Once the plants have bloomed they may be cut back to obtain a second flowering.
Historically, every plant in the Monarda genus (including bee balm) have many wonderful medicinal properties. Bee Balm can be used to; make a cold tea, topically as a wound poultice, and can even be eaten as it makes a wonderful citrus-like seasoning. One popular contemporary use is making Bee Balm Flower-infused honey. Edible parts: Leaves and flowers. The leaves of wild bee balm are edible raw or cooked. They are also used as a flavoring in salads and cooked foods. The flowers make an attractive edible garnish in salads. Fresh or dried flowers and (or) leaves can be brewed into an aromatic tea. Also very nice for potpourri - has a lemon citrus mint scent.

How to Grow: Plant in spring, early summer or late fall. Fall plantings should be late enough so that seeds do not germinate until spring. Perennials can also be sown in early fall provided that there are at least 10-12 weeks of growing time before the plants go dormant for the winter. In mild climates, plant during the cooler months of the year, fall through spring, for best results.If planted early enough in the spring you will get flowers the first year. Once established Bee Balm is quite hardy; but for the first 4-6 weeks keep soil moist (water often if it is not raining. Will grow best in full to partial sun; moderately dry to moist, but not wet soils, tolerates sandy, clay or loam soils. Moist rich soils are best.
