Welcome to Antiques & Moore!

This listing is for an attractive pair of Chinese standing water buffalo figures with each carrying on his back a young boy playing a flute. These figures are a matched pair (one facing left and the other facing right). The figures have a glazed body with the porcelain being a creamy color rather than being pure white like Blanc de Chine porcelains. The figures are a very nice quality with fine details in the modeling with the belly are left unglazed. The figures have a firing air hole between back legs. We believe the figures date to the early 20th Century (around 1920) but as we are not experts on Asian antiques, please use your own judgement determining age.

Measure 7 3/4" high, 7 3/4" long and approximately 4" wide. Combined weight just over 3 pounds.

These nice figures are in excellent Estate condition with no noted flaws. One figure does have a production flaw on the edge of the tail (slight roughness and 2 dark specks of sand). This is hardly noticed and does not take away from these lovely figures.

HISTORIC INFORMATION:  In the Chinese culture, water buffalo are symbolic of Springtime and agriculture and is often depicted in their art. When a young boy is included with the water buffalo, it is said to represent a honest, pastoral life which is idealized by Chinese scholars. It could also be interpreted that a powerful animal can be obedient to a child. The Chinese Emperor Hongwu, founder of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) was from very humble origins and art work featuring a young boy riding an ox/water buffalo are said to be representative of him.
