Millefiori means one thousand flowers
in Italian. Looking at this vintage millefiori necklace, it’s not difficult
to see how the technique got that name—each bead is like an abstract painting
of explosive, vibrant flowers. This necklace was created where the technique
itself was born centuries earlier: in Venice, Italy.
The painstaking, labor-intensive technique is evident in
how carefully every aspect of this necklace was attended to. The beads graduate
in size, each in the distinctive “olive” shape, and the fabric strand is
knotted between each bead for security. Brass caps visually separate the beads
from one another.
The necklace is meant to be worn as a double strand, the
effect being an endlessly colorful palette of crisp reds, deep greens, royal
blues, and egg yolk yellows.
