Edna Vogel (b.1901-d.1953) studied Ceramics with Ceramics Master Maija Grotell at Cranbrook Academy in the 1940's. They are pictured together in the Cranbrook Book. Vogel's pottery clearly "Student of Grotell", "Studio of Groetell" as you will see.

Edna Vogel's pottery is all signed "E.V." and signed with "C encircling A" for Cranbrook Academy. Please See photo!

Ms. Vogel also studied weaving with Marianne Strengell and Metals with Harry Bertoia at Cranbrook in the 1940's. Can you imagine?

Edna Vogel's story is an interesting footnote to American Modernism. Ms. Vogel wove the rugs for Frank Lloyd Wright's "Gregor Affleck House" in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, not far from Cranbrook. Edna also wove rugs for Architect Albert Khan and his family as well as for New York Diamond Dealer Harry Winston's Park Avenue apartment. Winston's Vogel rugs were featured in a 1949 National Design Interior Magazine. Unfortunately Ms. Vogel's career was cut short as she died of smoke inhalation from a fire in her South Salem New York textile studio home in 1953.

Heavy, solid, thick walled work. Not thin and delicate. I am not an expert! Please ask all questions before placing bids!

Recent 2017 article from The Cranbrook Academy website news "Cranbrook Kitchen Sink" gives some fine background information on artist Edna Vogel. I will update this listing with more information in a few days!
