This is very rare and beautiful Antique royal blue pitcher/jug,

made by WEDGWOOD in Jasperware pattern.

The bowl is marked with impressed 'WEDGWOOD" and "England", letter and number "21".

I think the letter is "U" and that dates the jug in 1892,

a year after word "England" is added to Wedgwood marking system

The jug has beautiful scenes, inspired by Greek mythology.

I am not sure if they are from "Sacrifice Figures" (or "Domestic Employment") relief series

It has a matte finish.

The Jug is 3 1/8" in diameter at the rim and it is 6 1/4" tall.
The pitcher is very rare and just beautiful.
It will make a wonderful gift or will be a great addition to any vintage china collection.

The jug is in good used antique condition with no cracks.

It could has very slight wear to the finish but only enough that one would expect to find in a piece this age.

There is one very small chip on the bottom.

Josiah Wedgwood introduced into production a black stoneware body in 1768. The first trials for Wedgwood's new black body had begun by July 1766, even before the move to Etruria. By September 1767 his experiments were at an advanced stage, ready for production, and less than twelve months later black basalt wares were on the market.

He called it ‘Black Basaltes'; we know it as black basalt. Made from reddish-brown clay which burned black in firing, this ceramic body was superior in its appearance to the local 'Egyptian Black' wares produced in the area prior to that date.

Wedgwood's black basalt body owed its richer color to the addition of manganese and was used by Josiah in the production of exquisite ornamental wares such as vases, portrait medallions, plaques, library busts, and candlesticks. They were mainly inspired by antique originals, many from the vases in the collections that had been amassed by such collectors as Sir William Hamilton. Wedgwood greatly admired what was erroneously known as the 'Etruscan' vase forms and emulated such wares in both shapes and applied enamel decoration.

Just imagine your special table set with these beautiful pieces. A party makes an elegant statement when set with antique porcelain.
