At the top of the list was Penske and the car started 5th for the start of the 24 hour race. This was the last year for the "LeMans" start and officials opted for the safer rolling start in the years to come. The Ferrari 512 was clocked on track at a top speed 222.6 and the 917 LH Porsche at 224.4. The updated Porsches finished 1-2 and Ferrari 512 3rd and 4th.
