Illustrated profusely throughout with colour plates, vignettes and facsimiles, this exhaustive and detailed set traces the history of literature in this country from its beginnings up until the "age of Tennyson", acting both as a history and as a bibliography, in a rare and seminal collaborative work.

The full titles of works included here are as follows:

Volume I: From the Beginnings to the Age of Henry VIII

Volume II: From the Age of Henry VIII ot the Age of Milton

Volume III: From Milton to Johnson

Volume IV: From the Age of Johnson to the Age of Tennyson

The first three volumes contain a bookplate gifting the books to one H. Ramsden, by the Delph Ladies and Gentlemen's Ambulance Classes.
