	ITEM DESCRIPTION: Here is a Beautiful Antique 19th C. Original W.W. Denslow Pulled Bookplate Chromolithograph of Two Cats Ready for a Scrap, from the 1899 book, Father Goose: His Book, after the original illustrations by the famous listed artist & illustrator ‘William Wallace Denslow (American, 1856-1915), and the text by famous children’s author & ‘L. Frank Baum’ (American, 1856-1919), both most famous for their following collaborative children’s book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900) which came out the following year. Denslow’s illustrations in Father Goose, were considered his best and many felt his pictures considerably outmatched Baum’s texts. The result “is more Denslow's than Baum's book, for the art dominates and at times overpowers the text.” (Michael Patrick Hearn, The Baum Bugle, “The Hatching of Father Goose”, Vol. 43, No. 3, Pg. 46, Winter 1999). Denslow’s abbreviated name ‘Den’ and his famous ‘Hippocampus’ (seahorse) logo appear printed upper middle-right in the image area. The rhyming text on the Bookplate reads: The cats they sit upon the fence At night, And show they hav’n’t any sense Of right, By making such a noise They wake the girls and boys And caterwaul till they commence To fight. The Chromolitho is in Fair-Good Rare+ condition for its antique age, with normal expected wear from the children who used this book long ago and is being sold “AS IS” in its original antique condition—and is ready for framing. The Bookplate is on a medium-weight cream-colored wove paper stock and is tipped (hinged at top & bottom) to an archival backing stock with a flip-front archival beige mat. There is also a color image with text on the back (as would be expected) for the preceding/following page. The image area is in VeryGood condition with no color fade—colors are still bright and crisp! The Bookplate size is 11” x 8-5/8”, Image Size is 7-3/4” x 5-7/8”, The size matted is 13-3/4” x 11-7/16”, Visible opening size is 8-1/8” x 6-3/8”. There is some expected slight & small crescent-creasing here & there in the image area with no ink crackage at all. Other light creasing here & there in the outer margin areas, along some outer margin edges, as well as in the corners (also rounded), with only a few small tears where the Bookplate had been attached/stitched to the spine along the right edge (7/8” longest, others mostly less than 3/8”) and subsequently removed, and a few other tiny one (less than 1/8”), and some outer margin edge wear with some dents & dings here & there—all outer margin issues are completely negligible and don’t show since the mat easily covers it. Extremely minimal foxing specks scattered here & there on the sheet which are hardly noticeable and not even worth mentioning. Minimal/normal topical surface soiling (slightly grubby) here & there on the sheet from use & handling back in the day by children, mostly noticeable in the outer margin areas, but certainly doesn’t detract from the image at all. This antique original Denslow chromolitho bookplate would make a wonderful addition to any Denslow collection and has never been framed, which is always more desirable to collectors since it has never been exposed to older non-archival materials, matburn or lightfade. Due to being matted, the piece will be shipped flat and safely hardpacked.
