ITEM DESCRIPTION:

Here is a Beautiful & Very Rare Vintage Mid Century Original 1943 WWII U.S. Propaganda Halftone Lithograph Poster (Not a modern reproduction) from the famous ‘Four Freedoms’ Series of Posters titled, “Ours…to fight for, Freedom From Want”, after the original painting by the world famous listed painter & illustrator ‘Norman Rockwell’ (American, 1894-1978 ), whose printed signature appears lower left in the image area and was featured on the March 6, 1943 cover of Saturday Evening Post. We currently have one other rare WWII War Bonds Poster by Norman Rockwell available “Save Freedom Of Worship, Each According To The Dictates Of His Own Conscience: Buy War Bonds”, so please have a look!

Print, Publisher & Printing Info: The title appears printed in the top outer margin area, as well as in the bottom margin. This Poster has the typical U.S. Government folds (tri-fold in halves [8 squares]), and their information appears printed lower middle in the bottom outer margin (near edge), ‘OWI Poster No. 45. Additional copies may be obtained upon request from the Division of Public Inquiries, Office of War Information, Washington, D.C., U.S. Government Printing Office: 1943-O-511886’, and the text, ‘Painting from Saturday Evening Post’, which appears printed lower right just under the image in the outer margin area respectively. “It is one of a series of four posters using Rockwell's paintings, inspired by the Four Freedoms described in Roosevelt's 1941 State of the Union Address: freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear. The US entered the war in December 1941, following the attack on Pearl Harbor. The Office of War Information (OWI) was set up in June 1942 to control the message and imagery of government information about the war. Rockwell created a sketches about the Four Freedoms to help the war effort, but no one in Washington was interested. The paintings were published by the Saturday Evening Post beginning February 26, 1943 and then reprinted, with permission, by the OWI. The OWI launched a nationwide tour with the paintings, raising $130 million dollars in war bond sales. They also offered the posters for sale in three different sizes [28” x 20”, 40” x 28” & 56” x 40”] and four million sets of the posters were printed.” (From: collections.ushmm). The Printer was the United States Government Printing Office. “Rockwell spent six months painting the Four Freedoms, which were published in a series of Saturday Evening Post issues in 1943, accompanied by short essays from four distinguished writers.” (From: saturdayeveningpost). The ‘Freedom’ title was written on the back lower left in ballpoint pen, but does not show through to the front. The Poster is on a light-medium weight cream-colored wove paper stock.

Size & Condition: The size with small margins is 28” x 20”, Image size is 21-3/16” x 16-9/16”. The Poster is in Excellent Rare+ condition for its vintage age with no real or discernible color fade. These types of propaganda pieces were intended to be used as simple inexpensive posters and put up in civic buildings, train stations, etc., or outside in the elements on billboards, walls, and around cities, and were not made to last, let alone be saved and/or framed up. To find ones in good, let alone excellent condition are fairly rare on the open market and are actively sought after by collectors. Our Poster is as good as any collector could hope to find in its original never-framed condition and will be sold “AS IS” in its “As Found/As Described” condition and no restoration with archival repair-tape (filmoplast) was done to the poster—which we will leave up to the winning bidder to do if they so choose, or want to have the piece linen-lined. This vintage poster has never been framed which is always more desirable to collectors since it has never been exposed to older non-archival materials, matburn or lightfade, but it was tacked to a wall at some point in its past and there are a handful of tiny tack-holes along the top outer margin edge (with two along image edge [one is barely in image]) in the left & right areas, as well as only two along the bottom margin near the edge middle-left & right respectively—with the exception of the two along the image edge, the others are completely negligible since the outer white areas can easily be matted & framed out. Extremely minimal wear along the poster’s original fold-lines which are 98+% intact with only a handful of tiny pinholes at the ‘center’ three intersection points of the folds, but aren’t too noticeable at all, as well as very minimal ink-cracking & fold-wear at center fold intersection and here & there along a few other crease-lines. Other very minimal slight crescent-creases here & there on the sheet which aren’t too noticeable either, as well as some minimal creasing here & there along the outer edges and corners—also negligible and easily matted & framed out. Ultra minimal outer edge wear at the top center crease-line with barely a 1/8” tiny tear—and as mentioned before, are negligible since the outer edge areas can easily be matted & framed out. No other tears at the outer crease-line edges. Extremely minimal (barely any) very tiny & faint foxing specks scattered here & there on the sheet which are hardly noticeable and not even really worth mentioning. Slight normal toning of the stock from age. Extremely minimal surface wear with a handful of very tiny surface nicks in the lower text ‘M’ in word ‘Freedom’ (left), which is basically negligible and certainly doesn’t detract from the piece at all. This beautiful & rare vintage WWII propaganda ‘war bonds’ poster will make a wonderful addition to any WWII/U.S. military history or art collection, and will be shipped flat & hardpacked (not folded) for safe transport and to prevent any further wear on the piece.

EMAILING US: eBayers, at all costs, please use eBay's email system only (no outside email addresses) to contact us with any questions you may have. eBay's email system GUARANTEES we get your email and more importantly, that you get ours. A lot of servers in the last few years have started using newer SPAM filters, and there have been a lot of problems with GOOD emails not getting through correctly, and being returned as undeliverable. We have had numerous problems in the past communicating with our eBayers outside of eBay because of it.

COLLECTORS & DEALERS: Please DO NOT email us (inside or outside of eBay's email system) with any offers to stop an auction early. It would not be fair to the rest of the eBay Worldwide community if we did that. THE HIGHEST BIDDER -OR- HIGHEST OFFER WINS IT!!!!!

Thank you from the Staff at Meibohm Fine Arts, GOOD LUCK & HAPPY BIDDING!!!
