Juan de Mariana, 1536 – 1624, was a Spanish Jesuit priest, historian, and member of the Monarchomachs. Mariana's Historia is justly esteemed for its research, accuracy, sagacity and style.

Samuel Edward Widdrington (formerly Cook), 1787 - 1856, was an English writer. Having served as a Captain in the Royal Navy, he lived for some years in Spain. He served as High Sheriff of Northumberland in 1854. He was a fellow of the Royal Society, and the Royal Geographical Society. By royal license he assumed the name Widdrington, and purchased the moiety in 1842. He inherited the Newton Hall estate from his father, Joseph Cook.
