This is a 'third spurious reprint of the fourth edition'. Watermark J X 1814 to page 3.

With half title and publisher's advertisement to rear.

The work so upset some of his critics they challenged Byron to a duel; over time, in subsequent editions, it became a mark of prestige to be the target of Byron's pen.

Previous owner's ink inscription and bookplate to front pastedown.


CONDITION

In a paper covered publisher's binding. Externally, sound but with some wear to extremities including loss to paper, marks to boards. Internally, generally firmly bound. Bright and generally clean throughout.k annotations to front, slight edgewear and small closed tear to joint. Internally, firmly bound. Bright but with odd spotting, background foxing and handling marks. Small ink annotation to title and institutional stamps.
