Here is an Absolutely Gorgeous and Extremely Rare+ Antique 19th Century Hand Colored Bookplate Lithograph of the Female Indian “Hayne Hudjihini”, as appears printed lower middle below the image. This Litho is from the Octavo Edition Book Set The History of the Indian Tribes of North America by Thomas L. McKenney (American, 1785-1859) & James Hall (American, 1793-1868), from a later printing circa 1865-70. ‘Rice, Rutter & Co. Publishers.’, as appears printed in the lower right corner. The Litho is on a nice cream wove stock and there is gum arabic applied to a few small areas in the image to accentuate certain areas like her eyes, hair, nose, mouth and shadow areas. The Litho is in Excellent Rare+ condition for its antique age with No Color Fade-Vibrant Color! The Litho has been in a drawer amongst other prints since it was purchased by the Meibohm family and hasn’t seen the light-of-day in all this time-it’s as beautiful as the day it was printed. This Litho will come with the original 2 pages of text bio info (front & back) about ‘Hayne Hudjihini, or The Eagle of Delight’ from the book, and is in Excellent condition with minimal slight creasing here & there and a few tiny scattered foxing dots here & there as well. ‘No. 47’, as appears printed in the lower left. The size of the Litho is 10-9/16” x 6-13/16”, Image size is about 6.25” x 5”. No damage at all in the image area. No Tears and extremely minimal slight creasing here & there in the margin corners. Minimal toning of the stock from age. Slight edge wear along right edge where it was glued/stitched into the book (fairly clean-cut edge). Only a few extremely tiny faint foxing specks here & there on the sheet. This rare antique 19th Century hand colored bookplate lithograph has never been framed, which is always more desirable to collectors since it has never been exposed to older non-archival materials, matburn or lightfade.

Brief History: Thomas McKenney was appointed Superintendent of Indian Affairs for the War Department from 1816 to 1830 and was one of only a few government officials that took an passionate interest in the affairs and relations of North American Indians at that time period. McKenney was concerned that the world of the Native American Indians and their customs would soon vanish before they could be properly documented. In 1921, McKenney commissioned the portrait artist Charles Bird King, and to a lesser extent works by James Otto Lewis and P. Rhindesbacher, to paint original portraits of a large delegation of Indian leaders as they came to Washington DC to speak with President James Monroe. In 1830, McKenney was dismissed by then President Andrew Jackson and he began to plan for the publication of a portfolio of prints of these portraits. It took over nine years to complete and nearly bankrupted McKenney and a few of the printers in the process. The first folio volumes were published from 1836-1844. The original folio was a collaborative effort and the text was written by James Hall, a Cincinnati lawyer and author, from information provided by McKenney. The octavo volumes were published later, to be more affordable and profitable, and were printed in several issues beginning in 1848 through 1870, with some of the later editions being abridged to contain as few as fifty of the original 120 plates. The originals portraits hung in the War Department’s Indian Gallery until 1858 and were eventually moved to the Smithsonian Institute. Unfortunately, all but a few were destroyed by a tragic fire at the Smithsonian in January of 1865.

Smaller items (like postcards & small prints) will also be securely & safely packed with each item wrapped in packing paper or archival glassine, then secured in between oversized cardboard, then shipped in a bubble-lined envelope.
