Description

The 356 was the model that established Porsche as a premier sports car manufacturer. Available as a coupe and convertible, production began in 1948 and concluded in 1965. Similar to its cousin, the Volkswagen Beetle, the 356 featured unibody construction, rear-wheel drive and a rear-mounted engine. The engine was based on Volkswagen's air-cooled flat four-cylinder architecture and featured improved components which more than doubled Volkswagen's power output. Significant races in which the 356 has competed include France's 24 Hours of Le Mans, Mexico's La Carrera Panamericana, and Italy's Mille Miglia and Targa Florio.
