Walt Whitman was an American poet, essayist and journalist. Democratic Vistas is considered an early example of comparative politics. The work was written whilst Whitman was working as a government clerk. Whitman argued that literature was the key to the political moral crisis. Whitman was considered rather controversial in his time with many unhappy with the overt sexuality present within his work, particularly his collection of poetry 'Leaves of Grass'.
