DESCRIPTION

English Bards and Scotch Reviewers is a satirical poem written by Lord Byron. It was first published, anonymously, in March 1809; the opening parodies the first satire of Juvenal. A second, expanded edition followed later in 1809, with Byron identified as the author.

The text is referred to in Tom Stoppard's play Arcadia. It is also referenced in John Edward Williams' novel Stoner in which it is mistaken by an incompetent graduate student as John Keats' work.

George Gordon Byron, most commonly known as Lord Byron was a English nobleman, poet and politician. To this day he is regarded as one of the greatest British poets, and is recognised as a pioneering figure of the Romantic movement. A man of great status, he was known to have accumulating great debts, and for his numerous, and at times scandalous, love affairs. It is in part Byron's flamboyant personality, his lifestyle and the suggestion of scandal, that has captured the the imagination of generations of readers, thus giving Byron's work longevity.
