A sniper is a highly trained marksman who operates alone, in a pair, or with a sniper team to maintain close visual contact with the enemy and engage targets from concealed positions or distances exceeding the detection capabilities of enemy personnel. These sniper teams operate independently, with little combat asset support from their parent units. Snipers typically have highly selective and specialized training and usehigh-precision/special application rifles and optics, and often have sophisticated communication assets to feed valuable combat information back to their units. In addition to marksmanship, military snipers are trained in camouflage, field craft, infiltration, special reconnaissance and observation, surveillance and target acquisition. The phrase reportedly originated during WW1 and was used by military pilots. Imagine that you’re sitting in a plane. Looking straight forward is 12 o’clock. 3 o’clock is to the right. 9 o’clock is to your left. 6 o’clock is directly behind you. If someone “has your six,” it means that they’re watching whatever is behind you. They’re watching your back. People now use it in a militaristic sense to mean that they are protecting you by watching out for dangers you cannot see. In the old days before computers took over, military pilots watched for enemy fighters. When they were spotted, they reported to the other pilots in the group using clock positions. 12 o'clock was directly ahead, 3 o'clock to the right, and so on. In addition, they reported whether the enemy was high, level, or low. One tactic was for a fighter to get behind the target plane. This gave the pilot plenty of time to line up his shot, since that was the undefended blind spot and flight vectors closely matched. “Check six” was a warning that a plane was getting into that position, and “I've got your six” meant the speaker was protecting that position. First, this was WWII rather than WWI. During WWI, radio was still in its infancy, requiring heavy batteries or generators and delicate glass vacuum tubes. Therefore during WWI, radio was mostly limited to ships. Second, this was said not between fighter pilots but rather by an escort fighter to a bomber. Thus the person saying “I’ve got your six” should be indicating that the other person has the main mission to accomplish — it’s asymmetrical. You’re not saying “we’re in this together,” you’re saying “you run the ball, I’ll block.” A common tactic by German fighter pilots was to attack an American bomber from straight ahead and high above. The nose was the best target on a bomber, and in case of a miss, the pilot could strafe the length of the bomber. Thus, another feared call was “Twelve o’clock high!”.
