This listing is for a furled tapered Monofilament flyfishing leader with a ring at the tippet end and a loop built into the large end of the leader which attaches to your fly line via a loop-to-loop method.

This Multi-filament furled tapered Transoptic (Color Changing) Gold Monofilament flyfishing leader with a ring at the tippet end has a loop built into the large end of the leader which attaches to your fly line via a loop-to-loop method. This leader is gold when in the sunlight and clear when in the water. The small laser treated, precision made micro ring allows the angler to connect the tippet as frequently as needed without shortening or damaging the furled leader. The smooth lazer welded micro tippet rings are super-small, lightweight and incredibly strong. They are perfect for nymph or wet fly fishing, however the dry fly fisherman will be amazed that these metal rings usually don't break the surface tension of the water so they will usually float on the surface.

After considerable testing and experimentation on fish over the last 20 plus years with furled leaders, we have developed this premium furled leader system with a special high quality multi-filament line in the optimum proportions so you will have a soft, castable and yet very strong connection to your flyline and tippet under all fishing conditions. Professional guides and those new to the sport, rave about our leaders.
The added benefit of choosing the right size pound test, color, leader length, leader termination and the leader material gives the average flyfisherman a big advantage when casting to wary fish.

This is a great addition to our product line!

Monofilament Fluorescent Blue Butt Loop

Unlike other leaders on the market, the loops at both ends of our leaders are intentionally made to "hand-shake" or collapse on your lines to maximize the power of your cast with a non-hinging connection. Usually, leaders loose much of the power of the cast at the connecting Shorb loop or other knots commonly used. The slim knotless Wonderfurl Leaders do not have a thick rigid loop that hinges and can hang up in the guides. Twenty five years ago, I lost a prize winning fish because a Shorb loop got stuck in my tip top guide.

This leader has excellent shock strength which means it holds strong under hard hooksets. It's sensitive enough to detect the softest bites and give you excellent shock absorbency when you set the hook. The proprietary technique used for tightly furling our leader is much better than any of our competitors.

We use premium quality multi-filament fluorocarbon or monofilament lines when assembling these leaders and design them so they  are extraordinarily flexible. The durable materials used to produce this leader will resist nicks and cuts against rough under-water objects. The the moderate stretch built into each leader, balances the fighting power needed to land your fish with the shock absorbing strength required to land your fish - We call this Shock Strength!!  Just add a monofilament or fluorocarbon tippet, of your choice, to the end of the leader to create your desired length. Because this furled leader offers such an efficient transfer of power from the rod, to the leader, to the tippet, and finally to the fly, you can expect to cast further and more effectively, turning over large and small flies. Amazingly long leader and tippet lengths over 20 feet are possible with our 9 foot leader (depending on angler ability, of course).

** All of our leaders are treated with a liquid line conditioner during the production process, which gives you the extra edge in smooth castability, distance, accuracy and long life. Currently, we are the only ones doing this.

Once you add this leader to your arsenal, you will be able to cast further, with more precision, detect more strikes and catch more fish than ever before!

This is simply the very best flyfishing leader made!
We back this leader with our 100% money back guarantee.
In 20+ years making these leaders we have never had anyone return one for a refund!

Here is a simple way to determine the correct leader for your fly rod & line system:
First pick the largest tippet size you want to use in the left column from the chart below.
Then simply pick the suggested leader in the right column.

For example, lets say you want to use tippet in sizes ranging from 3x to size 7x.
You would most likely pick the 8 Lb test furled leader, because 3x is the strongest tippet you will use with this leader. (Tippet strength can vary with every manufacturer, so check the tippet spool for strength first.) Remember, if your tippet is stronger than your furled leader, you will break the under-sized leader on a large fish, over-head tree or log floating down stream. It's better to increase the size of the furled leader, so it is stronger than the tippet you will use, so the leader will not break.

Much of what you read or have been told about leaders is just a lot of hype, but believe me - this is NOT JUST ANOTHER LEADER. Read below why our leaders will outperform and outlast the poorly made and highly advertised furled and store bought leaders that most people end up with.

More About Wonderfurl Leaders

If you have never heard of or have never seen a furled leader don't feel alone. Most fly fishermen buy whatever the fly shop has in stock or recommended to them and are never told about the superior attributes of furled leaders. Quite simply said, after trying one, you will wonder how you ever got along without it. For over 20 years, fishing guides from all over the world have used our Wonderfurl leaders. They say the best way to keep their clients on fish is to keep them on target, in the water with the fewest wind knots, break-offs, and with least amount of leader / tippet / fly retying delays, as possible. These guides have found that Wonderfurl leaders solve 95% of these problems. Nobody does leaders better than Wonderfurl Leaders!

Embark on the journey below which explains in detail why Wonderfurl Leaders are the best leaders made and why guides and customers return year after year to order more - read on and be enlightened.

The ultimate fly fishing leader is a furled or woven leader, because it will greatly improve your casting accuracy and your presentation from beginner to expert alike. Wonderfurl Leaders will build tremendous confidence the first time a beginner uses them. In the hands of a veteran fly caster you will swear you are watching Brad Pitt in the movie “A River Runs through It”. (I know, Brad didn't actually do the casting.)

The least understood element of a fly fisherman’s equipment is the leaderAnglers spend large sums of money on rods, reels, and even fly lines, but place relatively little emphasis on the element of tackle that is second only to the fly in proximity to their fish: the leader. Most flyfishermen spend less than a few dollars on a mass produced single strand of tapered leader, and then wonder why their aggregate system will not accomplish all the things expected of it. Don’t overlook your leader or underestimate its importance.  It makes little sense to weaken a wonderful and sometimes expensive, array of equipment costing sometimes hundreds of dollars, by forcing yourself to rely on a cheap inferior leader.

This leader has excellent shock strength which means it holds strong under hard hooksets.
It's sensitive enough to detect the softest bites and give you excellent shock absorbency when you set the hook.

Wonderfurl leaders are knotless and will efficiently transmit the energy of the cast every time and because our furled leaders are knotless; there are fewer lump-and-bumps to get tangled up. These tapered leaders are limp enough to turn over with the slightest energy, resulting in a very accurate presentation. I demonstrate them at sport shows by flicking the leader out without a fishing rod. With their streamlined taper and spiraled profile, Wonderfurl Leaders are less affected by wind than other knotted leaders. The weight distribution of the leader mimics the gradual tapered transition from a tapered fly line to the leader and therefore, has the same effect, therefore aiding the leader in turning over. Energy is what moves fly line, and the efficient transfer of that energy from the rod to the line and leader / tippet to the fly in the course of the cast is critical to placing the fly accurately where you want it.

Let me restate what is said above a different way. Tapered fly lines and furled leaders are more effective than store bought leaders in transferring energy through the cast because furled leaders easily transition from the thicker, heavier, and stiffer fly line to a thinner lighter and more flexible furled leader and then tippet to the fly. Because the weight distribution of the furled leader mimics the fly line out to the tippet, the transition of energy or its power maintains your line speed and makes casting easier and more accurate and predictable. The transition from a fly line that weighs several times that of the average leader material to the tippet and then the fly can be a major problem if the wrong leader is used.

The bottom line is, the energy of the cast is what moves the fly to the target, so the efficient transfer of that energy from the rod, to the fly line, to the furled leader, to the tippet and then ultimately to the fly in the course of the cast is critical. Furled leaders make this process intuitively simple compared to traditional curly single strand store bought leaders. Presenting a fly to the right spot is fun, but once you have the Fish-On, that's when the real fun starts. Don't loose the fish of a lifetime because you are using an inferior product.

Standard tapered leaders do not adequately transfer the power of the cast to the tippet and fly, often resulting in short or wayward casts, especially in windy conditions. This is not the case with Wonderfurl leaders. If the leader is unable to turn over the fly, the line is possibly hinging or has lost energy and is prematurely terminating in the collapse of the casting loop and possibly causing a tangled mess. The simplest way to minimize casting failure is to form a gradual transition to the fly. This gradual transition of the leader is best done with the Wonderfurl leader which will slow the speed of the loop until it unfolds, and often presents the fly at the end of a series of "S" curves on the water, allowing the fly to float without the added drag of the line. The transitional taper of the Wonderfurl leader is carefully matched to the weight of your fly line so you will slow the speed of both the fly and the leader, which means you won’t hit the water with a high impact splash. Also, the taper of the leader will slow down the fly so that it does not spin into a spiral or snap like a whip at the end of your backcast.

Wonderfurl's Ultimate Furled Leaders Are Better!

Wonderfurl leaders provide unmatched over-strike protection because of there superior elasticity (except for our specialized Fluorocarbon/Dyneema leader). Throw those shock tippets away! Just hold the butt end in one hand and the fine tip in the other hand. Now carefully outstretch your arms and feel the natural resiliency built into this leader (do not exceed leader strength). Don’t loose that really big fish of a lifetime in the last few feet of landing him when lots of pressure is applied. With other types of leaders, your tippet will usually part ways with that trophy when that much pressure is applied. Our leaders will absorb a lot of that energy, which is not the case with standard extruded "store bought" tapered leaders, knotted hand-made leaders or the cheap sewing machine style "Thread" furled leaders that some are making in their garage. Experience will be your best teacher, but it is better to be safe with our automated premium quality furled leaders instead of a single-strand leader or the "home-made" knock-off leaders.

Wonderfurl leaders have been engineered to give you unparalleled performance and presentation on the water. The automated equipment we use to produce our leaders is strictly monitored during the production process. These leaders are carefully assembled to very strict tolerances which was developed and fine tuned over a span of more than 20 years. By automating what use to be a very labor intensive, hand-made operation prone to mistakes, we have eliminated many of the inconsistent results found with other similar furled leaders. The staff at Wonderfurl Leaders produces thousands of leaders every year and have never had one returned for a refund or replacement! Don’t be fooled by others with inferior hand-made leaders who claim to make a quality product. Most furled leaders are tapered down only 3 times from the butt end (fly line end) to the tippet end. Wonderfurl Leaders have a carefully designed 5-step taper with the best line available for the very best possible transfer of power from your fly rod to the fly. By using a liquid line conditioner during production and quality components, the longevity of our leaders is superior to what others can produce. Keep in mind that not all furled leaders are created equal. Others have tried to duplicate our leaders with marginal to poor results. Our biggest concern is that someone will purchase a poorly designed furled leader made with poor quality materials from one of our competitors and then go back to a standard leader because the furled leader fails to live up to the claims. Get a Wonderfurl Leader first and you will never use the home-made and store-bought extruded leaders again!  I GUARANTEE IT OR YOUR MONEY BACK!!

Wonderfurl multifilament furled tapered leaders are superior to single strand hollow-core braided leaders. Single strand hollow core braided leaders tend to soak up water like a leaky pipe, so it's not recommended that you use a water-logged braided leader because it will quickly sink and drag a dry fly unnaturally underwater, imped the float and make your leader system unnecessarily heavy while nymphing. A water-logged braided leader will create a "rooster tail" spray of water when lifted out of the water, which can put down the fish, let alone prove devastating to your casting performance. Wonderfurl leaders are different because the furling is accomplished by tightly weaving, twisting (twining) and looping nearly 100 feet of premium line together, so it has no hollow core. In short, since our furled leaders are very tightly twisted together and have no hollow core, they absorb little to no water and therefore they pick cleanly off the water. You get a natural presentation and NO SPRAY.

Wonderfurl leaders are also “wind knot” resistant
which is not the case with standard tapered monofilament style leaders.

Wonderfurl Leaders are all-season durable.

Joe Butler - Fishing Guide Approved

Another important fact is that the lack of memory, kinking and curling with these leaders will reduce the drag problems that are so commonly associated with thick, stiff extruded knotless tapered leaders. Also, if desired, the multifilament furled leader surface makes it easy to apply line dressing for floating or sinking because these agents adhere much better than on a smooth single-strand monofilament leader.

Unlike other leaders on the market, the loops at both ends of our leaders (except leaders with a ring) are intentionally made to "hand-shake" or collapse on your lines to maximize the power of your cast with a non-hinging connection. Also, the slim knotless Wonderfurl Leaders do not have a thick rigid loop (Shorb loop) that can hang up in the guides.

Wonderfurl leaders come pre-assembled with a ring, a swivel or a short 14-inch extension attached to the small tippet loop of the furled leader to facilitate the easy changing of tippet material. Depending upon what you choose to order, the ring, swivel or extension remains permanently on the furled leader so all you need do is add your tippet material and your favorite fly. Tippet material is tied to the ring or swivel or the loop on the extension rather than on the end of the tippet-loop of the furled leader. Since tippet material is changed often, the use of a ring, swivel or an extension protects the furled leader's tippet-loop from accidental damage when cutting off old tippets.

or

or

The length of the tippet material tied to the furled leader varies according to the angler's preference and casting ability, but usually a three to six foot length is adequate for most fishing conditions. A shorter length of tippet for nymphing and wet flies, and longer tippet is normal for dry flies. The combination of tippet material and furled leader can produce an exceptional overall length of 10 to 20 feet, depending upon the furled leader length and anglers abilities.

Unlike standard extruded tapered leaders, you won’t have to worry about the leader breaking at the knot as the knotless multiple strands of line will hold up to the sudden hard surges so common with larger fish. Many customers tell us about the large fish over 20 pounds that are caught on our 12 pound test furled leaders. We don't recommend this, but it does happen.

Caught on 12lb test

Wonderfurl leaders are woven tighter than other furled leaders on the market.
This enhances the effectiveness of the leader by insuring you get a very strong, soft, quiet, powerful and superbly accurate landing of your flyfishing leader - Simply Awesome!

This is not a "single-season" throw-away leader, so expect to use our leaders for much longer than normal. The built-in elasticity of a Wonderfurl leader creates less stress on the leader with the multiple line configuration sharing the stress of a large fish (or tree hang-up). Less stress means the leader will last longer (you spend less money on replacement leaders). In addition, with fresh, new, quality materials and careful construction, this leader will last a minimum of one season and possibly longer than a comparable store-bought leader that may last a couple times at the water. Even though Wonderfurl leaders cost a little more money, they actually save you money in the long run compared to standard leaders because they last so much longer. Component cost, as well as the additional labor required to make furled leaders, is much higher than the cost of single strand store bought leaders that are "spit" out like popcorn from other manufacturers.

The small laser treated, precision made micro sized ring on the tippet end of some of our leaders will allow you to connect the tippet as frequently as you want without shortening or damaging the furled leader. Our laser welded micro tippet rings are smooth and very light and incredibly strong. They are perfect for nymph or wet fly fishing, however the dry fly fisherman will be amazed that these metal rings will usually float on the surface of the water (unless a weighted fly is used).

About the Wonderfurl 100% fluorocarbon leaders: They are soft, castable and made using the best fluorocarbon material for wet strength possible. Designed to refract light just like water. This fluorocarbon line is virtually invisible to fish because it reflects less light (glare). Simply stated, the less glare, the less visibility which means more fish caught. Also, the furled surface is not as prone to glare as a single strand of monofilament would be because the weave design breaks up any reflected light (camouflage effect) that might be present. Another advantage of fluorocarbon leaders is its ability to resist the effects of ultraviolet light degradation. Fluorocarbon is also tougher than monofilament, which is due in part to its slickness. Typically, fluorocarbon slides over rocks, obstacles and through weeds with less resistance than nylon monofilament line. This reduces the amount of abrasion which causes the weakening of the leader in those situations. Fluorocarbon is twice as heavy as water and sinks four times faster than nylon monofilament so it is the perfect solution for nymphing and wet-fly presentations. Wonderfurl fluorocarbon leaders just may also make the difference in clear water situations in which fish are highly pressured or “line shy.” Don't loose the fish of a life time because of a weak link in your fly fishing arsenal.

A highly visible leader is a fly fisherman's "sonar" for detecting line movement when a fish bites, which just may be the difference some days between being "skunked" or catching fish. Throw away the strike indicators, as some heavily fished areas don't do very well when fish see strike indicators floating over them all day.

Question: Who will benefit from using a furled leader?

Answer: Anyone that casts a fly line and wants to improve their skill level, presentation and the number of fish caught. We have many guides that use our leaders and recommend them to their clients.

Note to you guides: The built-in resiliency of our leaders means your clients will break off fewer fish, which also means more satisfied customers. If you want to spend less time with wind knots and retying after a client breaks off a big fish, use our leaders.

Question: What leader is best for my rods?

Answer: The best way to determine the proper furled leader to use is to first determine what size tippet you will attach to it. Basically, just make sure the furled leader is stronger than the tippet you want to use. If you go after heavier and stronger fish or use large, heavy, and/or wind resistant flies, you should move up to a stronger leader and tippet, which may also require a heavier line weight and rod.

Question: Should I get the monofilament or fluorocarbon leaders?

Answer: Use the monofilament versions for dry flies and fluorocarbon for subsurface fishing with a nymph or wet fly (monofilament leaders float and fluorocarbon leaders sink). Use the 6 Lb test fluorocarbon leader when nymph fishing with light-weight rods. You can also use the 4.75 Lb test monofilament leader with a split shot or a weighted fly if you prefer a monofilament setup. When nymphing or wet fly fishing with fluorocarbon, you should go one size larger than you normally would as the fluorocarbon disappears under water which allows you to go up in strength, just in case you snag a big fish or a log, etc. Fluorocarbon sinks much faster than monofilament but you can add weight to the fluorocarbon leader if you decide you need to get down faster.

Question: Does the leader come with the tippet already attached?

Answer: No, but we make the leaders with a one foot extension at the tippet end of the leader so it's easy for you to attach or replace the tippet of your choice. We also make a version of this leader without the extension, but instead it has a very small metal ring at the tippet end of the furled leader so you can tie your tippet directly to it. How easy is that?

Question: What is the best knot to use to tie on the tippet?

Answer: If you want a loop-to-loop connection with the leader and tippet, try using the non-slip loop knot. Others knots that work well are the Perfection Loop, Duncan Loop, and the Surgeon's loop. The blood knot is the most popular knot for joining two sections of line together if you dislike loops. Make sure you wet your tippet knots before tightening. After assembly, use "Loon Knot Sense" or the new Cortland "Knot +" formula which locks the knot and creates a near 100% connection (available from our eBay store).
