Event Publicity / Propaganda Poster Stamp

Esposizione Nazionale di Caricature - National Caricature Exhibition, held in Bologna, April 22 - May 22, 1916.
Design is by Augusto Majani (1867 - 1959) under the pseudonym "Nasica",
and depicts an imp with a pen in his mouth, holding up, by their ears, caricatures of Emperor Franz Joseph and Kaiser Wilhelm of the Austro-Hungarian and German Empires - a political statement during the time of World War One.
    According to Wikipedia:

Augusto Majani ( Budrio, 30 January 1867 - Buttrio, 8 January 1959 ) was an Italian painter and illustrator.

His artistic activity is closely linked to illustration and caricature: the collaboration with satirical Bolognese magazines such as "Ehi, ch'al scusa!" starting in 1887,"Bologna che dorme" in the years 1898 - 1899, the "Fittone" in 1910-11, made him famous under the pseudonym of Nasìca. In fact, the signature "A. Majani" was reserved exclusively for his pictorial production. In 1888 on the occasion of the great Exhibition held at the Giardini Margherita in Bologna he conceived the poster and illustrated the special issues dedicated to the event.

He left for Rome in 1889, for health reasons he returned to Budrio in 1894, where he consolidated his romantic relationship with Olga Lugaresi, his inspirer and model, whom he later married after a long engagement in 1905.

In Budrio he painted the "Portrait of Filopanti" and in 1896 he realized an altarpiece for the Capuchin Church of Budrio depicting "The Holy Family with St. Francis", recently recovered and restored and currently exhibited in the church of Sant'Agata in Budrio. The awards in the pictorial field led him to repeatedly participate in the Venice Biennale in the years between 1897 and 1924. In 1898 he created a large painting dedicated to the battle of Mentana, presented at the National Exposition in Turin.

Difficult economic conditions for his family led him to expand his activity as an illustrator in newspapers and magazines: in particular he began a stable collaboration with the newspaper "Il Resto del Carlino" and with several magazines and publishing houses in Bologna. From 1900 for Zanichelli he began a rich production of covers and illustrations and also actively took up work with Alfredo Testoni, for whom he created posters, sketches, and stage sketches for his plays. In 1902 he created the poster for the VII Italian Socialist Congress. In 1911 he illustrated one of the panels of the Emilia-Romagna Pavilion for the Rome Ethnographic Exhibition. The work of illustratorit is almost uninterrupted in the artistic life of Majani: with Tirelli from 1910 he collaborates with the humorous weekly "Il newspaper delle beffe" and then with "Il Punto". "Come on! of the Sunday" , "Il Secolo XX" , "Corriere dei Piccoli" , "Le Vie d'Italia" , "La domenica dei ragazzi" are just some of the newspapers and magazines with whom he continued to work in the first decades of the twentieth century. In the 1920s with Zanichelli, and the Famèja Bulgnèisa, Augusto Majani expresses his humorous vein in posters, gifts, invitations and menus for convivial meetings with a food and wine theme. In the spirit of the time, in which the artists deal with the applied arts, he taught at the Regina Margherita Professional School in Bologna, a course of "History of Costume". Meanwhile, his pictorial production was influenced by the places linked to the summer stays of Augusto Majani: first in the Apennines, in Lizzano in Belvedere, and then in the Romagna Riviera. In addition to the paintings depicting landscapes, genre scenes and historical subjects, Majani produced a large oil entitled "The shadow of the Cross"; started in 1897, this work was revised, rethought and retouched by the painter who would not complete it until 1947. In this painting, realized in a period that includes the two wars, today exhibited in the Domenico Inzaghi Civic Art Gallery in Budrio , the artist expresses his profound sensitivity to the themes of religiosity and the destiny of humanity. After retirement he moved to Casalecchio di Reno where he lived until 1950, when his daughter Franca would marry Count Gianfranco D'Attimis Maniago and the whole family moved to Buttrio, in Friuli, on the estate of the D'Attimis Maniago family. In Buttrio the artist died in 1959 shortly after the death of his wife Olga. The spouses are buried in the cemetery of their native town in Budrio. In 1947, on the occasion of his eighty years, the Famèja Bulgnèisa and the Circolo Artistico of Bologna dedicated an anthological exhibition to him and again in 1950 an exhibition of Majani's drawings and caricatures. After his death there were many initiatives to enhance his artistic work in Bologna and in particular in Budrio, where in the municipal library named after him and in the Civic Art Gallery there is a large part of the public patrimony of paintings, drawings, printed materials that document the activity of Augusto Majani painter, illustrator and cultural witness of his age.

After 35+ years I decided to retire from being an active Cinderella Stamp dealer. Most of my working inventory plus backup stock was sold at public auction. However, I have retained some material that I will be offering for sale. In addition, I have some "new" material that was mixed into lots I have bought for my own collections. I will be listing some of the material in my eBay store at fixed prices. I will also be offering some material at auction, either as single items or mixed lots. There will be many bargains available. There will be large and small lots, some containing similar material, some containing a random mixture, and some containing only one or a few items. The condition will be mixed, but none of the lots will be just accumulations of damaged or faulty stamps (unless specifically listed as such).

Items in stockpage or larger lots may be removed and repackaged into glassines to save on shipping costs.

A Note about Poster Stamps and Gum: Because many poster stamp collectors are primarily interested in the image on the stamp, the absence or presence of gum on the back is of little concern. If no mention of gum is made, then there may or may not be gum present. If you are only interested in poster stamps with original gum, please inquire before bidding. Actual condition issues (that are not apparent from the scan) WILL be described.

* A Note about "Stock Images": Occasionally I will have more than one example of an item in inventory. Rather than scan each one individually, I may use the same image for multiple examples of the item. If that is the case, the item supplied will be in substantially the same, or better, condition than the image. Any such items will have the words: "STOCK IMAGE" at the end of the description.
