DESCRIPTION
The third edition of this work.
Illustrated with a frontispiece, with numerous in-text illustrations throughout.
This work is a fictionalised account of the authors, Sara Jeannette Duncan, around the world trip with Lily Lewis. The two women embarked on their tour in 1888. At the time, the idea of women travelling alone was shocking and unconventional.
The work is prominent for having the first description of the city of Vancouver in fiction.
'A Social Departure' was successful upon its publication, and was known for being cheerfully anecdotal, and for its wry humour, and close observation that showed Duncan's talent in journalism.
Sara Jeannette Duncan was a Canadian journalist and author, who wrote for the 'Washington Post' where she was in charge of the current literature section.
Lily Lewis was a journalist from Montreal.
Illustrated by F. H. Townsend, a British illustrator. Townsend illustrated the second edition of 'Jane Eyre' by Charlotte Bronte in 1847.
With thirty-four pages of publisher's adverts to the rear.
