DESCRIPTION

Kelsall (1782-1857), was a traveller, scholar, author, amateur architect and Cambridge Hellenist.

"The text takes the form of a series of presentations made to the committee, each character making his own case for the form the monument should take, and where it should be located. Some are made by the spirits of departed persons, such as Longinus, Aeschylus, Moliere, Milton, Pope, Voltaire, Garrick, Johnson and so on; others by a Stratford butcher, a shepherd, an architect, a builder, a Danish merchant, a Venetian gentleman, a Newcastle schoolmaster, "Samuel Grim, plug-turner of the pipes which supply the theatre with gas," "Lancelot Blood," student in anatomy, and so on."
