DESCRIPTION

An English baronet, antiquary and book-collector, Phillipps was noted for his severe obsession with books and manuscripts, which both earned him the distinction of the largest personal collection in the world at that point, as well as corresponding crippling debt for him and his family.

Here, A.N.L. Munby takes a detailed look into the fortune of Phillipps and his collection, cataloguing the books and tracing the rise and fall of his personal library across the five volumes.

Each volume contains a frontispiece plate and is direct from the library of the late Hugh Selbourne MD (1906-1973), a noted book collector and diarist.
