DESCRIPTION

Owen Meredith was the pen name of Robert Bulwer-Lytton, the 1st Earl of Lytton. He published his his first volume of poems at the age of twenty five and went on to publish many more over the course of his life.

The poetry was very popular in his day, and typically exhibited great experimentation with form.

His career outside of poetry was as a diplomat: he served as Viceroy of India between 1876 and 1880. He ordered the invasion which sparked the second Anglo-Afghan War.

This Volume is from a series called 'The Cantebury Poets'.

It includes the bookplate of Phyllis Crossley, and bears her first name in gilt to the front board. She was probably the Lady Somerleyton, daughter of Sir Henry de Bathe.

There is an ink inscription to one of the front blanks showing that the copy was a Christmas present in 1897.

There is a bookbinder's stamp to the front pastedown: Hatchards.
