Cratty was born in Delaware County, Ohio, September 29, 1833, son of
William and Candis Bennett Cratty. He came with his parents and eleven
brothers and sisters to Illinois in 1853. He graduated from the College
of Law, Northwestern University, in 1861. He then practiced law in
Elmwood and Peoria, Illinois, until 1880, when he came to
Chicago.
- In 1884 the firm of Dent, Black & Cratty Bros. was
established, his brother, Josiah Cratty, then coming from Peoria to
enter into partnership with this firm. Later firm names were Cratty
Bros. & Aldrich; Cratty Bros. & Ashcraft; Cratty Bros.; Jarvis
& Cleveland and Cratty Pros., Jarvis & Hudson.
