100 Seeds- Poppy Hen and Chicken Flower Seeds/PAPAVER SOMNIFERUM/ Have unusual Seeds Pods/Great for decorations/FL512
This ancient form of cultivated poppy produces the most unusual seed pod of all poppies. The main pod is surrounded by masses of smaller pods giving the impression of a mother hen and chicks. Papaver somniferum 'Hens and Chicks' are primarily grown for their curious seed pods which are extremely decorative and are much in demand for cut and dried flower arrangements.
Hens and Chicks poppy develop large flower heads that stay curled downward for several days longer than other varieties. The ‘chicks’ are developing during this waiting period and will soon force the caps over the flower to crack as the stem straightens and the flowers open.
Called Poppy Hens And Chicks or Poppy Hens And Chickens, these Poppy seeds are grown more for the unique seed pods than the actual flower. After the Poppy flower fades and the petals fall, the seed pod is left. The main pod is surrounded by masses of smaller pods giving the impression of a mother hen and chicks. Poppy uses include drying and preserving to be used in dried arrangements and its very decorative. This Poppy plant grows to about 24 - 36 inches high. The foliage is unique for Poppies, with broad lettuce-like leaves. Hens and Chicks Poppy pods are sought after, but the Poppy flowers are lovely as well. They are large, single-petaled and usually a deep red to a light purple.
