Narrative:
Church of St. Paul at Antwerp : This Late Gothic church was begun in 1517 and completed in 1639, and is surmounted by a Baroque bell tower (1680). Baroque furnishings and beautiful 17C wooden panels on the confessionals, which are framed by huge expressive figures, richly embellish the majestic interior. Statues surround the chancel, which is narrower than the nave, giving an impression of depth further accentuated by the elevated position of the monumental marble altarpiece. In the north aisle paintings from the Rubens' school depict the Mysteries of the Rosary. This series of works includes one by Rubens himself depicting the Flagellation, a powerful painting in muted colours. There are two other works by Rubens in the transept, dating from about 1609: Adoration of the Shepherds (north transept) and Dispute on the Nature of the Holy Sacrament (south transept).
