Most of the info is from before his arrest and incarceration in 2006.

Local rapper Kevin "Big Kev" Herndon, who has performed or appeared at concerts across Hampton Roads with hip-hop superstars Snoop Dogg and 50 Cent

Herndon also has performed in local concerts with national hip-hop artists Kanye West and Roc-A-Fella's Young Gunz. The Daily Press featured him as an up-and-coming performer who began rapping during his days at Phoebus High School.

Herndon has performed across Hampton Roads, and his musical career has met moderate success. A few of his songs reached local radio airwaves, including "Let Me Hold U," "We Can Get It On," and "Do My Thang," and he signed deals with LOUD Records and All Star Entertainment.

A Web site for Beach Road Records, based in Hampton Roads, listed Herndon's appearances, singles and media interviews.

He's been rapping since at least 1996 when he emerged as part of a Buckroe-based collective called Sertified Dope. A few years later he was tapped to record promos on WOWI-FM (102.9), the area's powerhouse rap and R&B; station. That relationship led to Big Kev's independent single "We Can Get It On," winning airplay on the station.

"Hearing that on the radio was the happiest day of my life," Herndon recalled. "I heard DJ Bee start with, 'World premier!' Then, he was cutting and scratching with the record. I was like, 'Oh, my God! I waited forever for this!' That was a high that could not be matched."

Big Kev was eventually invited to open shows for major acts like 50 Cent, Kanye West and Snoop Dogg. The Snoop show, which took place at The NorVa in Norfolk in 2003, was part of a promotional blitz funded in part by Ricky Cullipher, a local man whose own legal plight was chronicled in a Daily Press news series "Two lives. One bullet. No justice."

Herndon seemed to be close to a record deal with Loud Records around the time of his drug bust. Between his conviction and his sentencing, he was selected to rap on national television through the "Freestyle Friday" feature on the BET show "106 & Park."

BIG KEV hails from Hampton, VA-in the section known as Buckroe.  He was the first to come out the hood in VA and get a deal. Big Kev signed with LOUD records in 1999. He was on the same label as Big Pun, X-to the Z, Mobb Deep, and Wu-Tang.

Today, Herndon's independent single "Who Dem Talk Bout" hits several stores in the area. In conjunction with the release, he's launching a regional promotional campaign intended to put him on the national rap music map. Ricky Cullipher has invested in Herndon's show business endeavor, making more aggressive promotion possible.

"And we'll be all through the streets that day," promised Leron "Humble" Christian, whose locally based company Main Event Entertainment is issuing the single.

A full-length CD is in the works.

In 1994, he impressed rap fans as part of the Hampton duo Sertified Dope. A few years later, Herndon ventured out on his own, releasing rhymes on mix tapes and getting limited exposure on radio stations WOWI-FM (102.9) and WBHH-FM.

"Who Dem Talk Bout," sounds like the work of a seasoned gangsta-style MC. On it, Big Kev raps, "My squad's ready to bang, I'm the new version of Rakim and Big Daddy Kane, mixed in one, so don't get it twisted, son."

The disc, recorded at Beach Road Records, will be available at Bottom Beat and Future Hits records in Newport News, Nubian Designs in Hampton and at DJ's Music and Video locations in South Hampton Roads.
