Stanley
Cornwell Lewis MBE (1905 –2009) British portrait painter and illustrator.
Stanley
Lewis was born in Wales and studied at the Newport School of Art in Wales from
1923 to 1926. He was awarded a place at the Royal College of Art where he
studied from 1926 until 1930. In 1930 he won second prize in the Rome
Scholarship Awards in Mural Painting, and later that year returned home to take
up the post of Painting Master at Newport School of Art. In 1939 World War II
was declared and he was called up in 1941 for initial training in North Wales
and joined the Searchlight Regiment of the Gloucestershire Regiment in
Somerset. After the war Stanley Lewis became Principal of Carmarthen School of
Art. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1932 and 1961 and his work is
held in pubic collections, including the Newport Museum and Art Gallery in
Wales and the Fleet Air Arm Museum at Yeovilton.
Stanley
illustrated newspaper articles by his wife Min Lewis and her book Laugharne and
Dylan Thomas. They had become friends with Dylan and Caitlin Thomas when they
lived across the Taf estuary from them in Llansteffan, Carmarthenshire. Min,
who was born in Rogerstone, Monmouthshire, penned dozens of children’s stories
for the South Wales Evening Post, alongside her books, some of which were even
considered by Hollywood screenwriters.
I
have acquired a large body of work by Stanley Lewis. Preliminary studies for
major painted works, figurative and landscape drawings, together with a number of
ink cartoon illustrations. Many signed. I have detailed a photo of Stanley
Lewis, and an image of a large part of the collection in the last two images
(not included in this sale). This listing is for a single paper as detailed
below.
Fine chalk, graphite study of a young boy, Titled Elwyn W? (covered by mount). Drawn on light brown paper and signed lower right. Beautiful female portrait study verso that has been scribbled over in pencil. Reasonable condition, with age related toning and minor mark/blemishes. A trimmed mount is glued to the paper, so it would recommend have the paper professionally restored and the mount removed
Paper measures 26.5cm x 28cm.
