Title - New Star Formations Light Up the Galaxy

Description - Located some 13 million light-years from Earth, NGC 4214 is currently forming clusters of new stars from its interstellar gas and dust. In this Hubble image, we can see a sequence of steps in the formation and evolution of stars and star clusters. The picture was created from exposures taken in several color filters with Hubble's Wide Field Planetary Camera 2. NGC 4214 contains a multitude of faint stars covering most of the frame, but the picture is dominated by filigreed clouds of glowing gas surrounding bright stellar clusters. The youngest of these star clusters are located at the lower right of the picture, where they appear as about half a dozen bright clumps of glowing gas. Young, hot stars have a whitish to bluish color in the Hubble image, because of their high surface temperatures, ranging from 10,000 up to about 50,000 degrees Celsius. The radiation and wind forces from the young stars literally blow bubbles in the gas. Over millions of years, the bubbles increase in size as the stars inside them grow older. Moving to the lower left from the youngest clusters, we find an older star cluster, around which a gas bubble has inflated to the point that there is an obvious cavity around the central cluster. The most spectacular feature in the Hubble picture lies near the center of NGC 4214. This object is a cluster of hundreds of massive blue stars, each of them more than 10,000 times brighter than our own Sun. A vast heart-shaped bubble, inflated by the combined stellar winds and radiation pressure, surrounds the cluster. The expansion of the bubble is augmented as the most massive stars in the center reach the ends of their lives and explode as supernovae.

A Note on Image Quality:

The quality of historic images are subject to the wearing of time, the capabilities of the original photographer, and limitations of period technology.  Please note that we do not fix or enhance the original image in any way, as we feel these eccentricities add to its historic character. Please see our "Restored Photo" category for enhanced-version photographs.  Thank you for taking this into consideration before making your purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How are your photographs processed?

We pride ourselves on bringing you only the finest quality prints by consistently taking advantage of the ever-growing advances in photo technology.  One of the ways we achieve this is with giclee, a high resolution, high-fidelity process using a performance-specialized large format printer.  Giclee (pronounced zee-CLAY) utilizes inkjet technology, but far more advanced than a standard deskjet.  Among other advantages, giclee employs an ulta-wide color gamut using 11 (or more) specified inks. Originally developed as a proofing system for the traditional lithograph, the superior quality and brilliance of the giclee was soon realized.  Also, giclees are produced digitally, saving generations of the detail-robbing experienced with older methods such as negatives and plates.  This is why giclee, dye sublimation and similar processes have become the gold standard of photographic production in the 21st century, and are employed by the majority of today's reputible photograpic and printhouse developers.

How do I know your image description is accurate?

We strive to make our photo descriptions as accurate as possible. Descriptions are taken directly from the U.S. Library of Congress, National Archives, or other sources as noted. In many cases, these institutions hold the original negatives and state the ascribed notes directly from the original photographer. Therefore, we use these institutions as our standard of authority on description accuracy. We are not responsible for errors and we will not participate in disputes. Should you have a dispute, please contact the sighted source directly.

This listing images provide buyers the opportunity to assess the accuracy of the photo description before finalizing a purchase.  As such, we don't accept returns on the basis of an allegedly inaccurate description.  We encourage you to feel confident in the stated description before ordering.

When can I expect my package?

Items are shipped via USPS First Class mail (2-5 business days).  Our items are made especially for you at the time you place your order, so please allow 1 day for processing (2 for larger orders).  Your package should not be considered untimely unless it has not been received after one full week from your payment date (within the United States).  Please consider weekends and holidays when anticipating your package arrival date as well.

Is your transit packaging secure?

Great care will be taken to ensure that your item arrives in excellent condition. Prints are shipped flat on cardboard and sealed in a water-resistant envelope or, for 11x14 prints and larger, rolled in a crush-resistant tube.  Please note that we pay extra to have orders over $6.00 delivered as PACKAGES, not regular mail.  This means your carrier should deliver your package to your doorstep (not bent or crammed it into your mailbox).  Should you find your package damaged due to this type of handling, please inform your local postmaster.

What is your return policy?

We will happily exchange any defective or problematic merchandise.  However, cash refunds are not allowed, as each item is made-to-order especially for you.  Therefore, please be confident of purchase before placing your order.  We ask that you contact us with any issues before leaving negative feedback, as we are committed to your 100% satisfaction and feel any problem can be easily resolved.
