Title - Unique Pairing of Galactic Silhouettes

Description - Unique galaxy pair called NGC 3314. Through an extraordinary chance alignment, a face-on spiral galaxy lies precisely in front of another larger spiral. This line-up provides us with the rare chance to visualize dark material within the front galaxy, seen only because it is silhouetted against the object behind it. Dust lying in the spiral arms of the foreground galaxy stands out where it absorbs light from the more distant galaxy. This silhouetting shows us where the interstellar dust clouds are located, and how much light they absorb. The outer spiral arms of the front galaxy appear to change from bright to dark, as they are projected first against deep space, and then against the bright background of the other galaxy. NGC 3314 lies about 140 million light-years from Earth, in the direction of the southern hemisphere constellation Hydra. The bright blue stars forming a pinwheel shape near the center of the front galaxy have formed recently from interstellar gas and dust. A small, red patch near the center of the image is the bright nucleus of the background galaxy, NGC 3314b. It is reddened for the same reason the setting sun looks red. When light passes through a volume containing small particles (molecules in the Earth's atmosphere or interstellar dust particles in galaxies), its color becomes redder. The Hubble Heritage color image of NGC 3314 was constructed from archival images taken with WFPC2 in April 1999 by Drs. William Keel and Ray White III (University of Alabama) in blue and infrared light, combined with new images obtained by the Heritage team in March 2000 using blue, green and red filters.

A Note on Image Quality:

The quality of historic images are subject to the wearing of time, the capabilities of the original photographer, and limitations of period technology.  Please note that we do not fix or enhance the original image in any way, as we feel these eccentricities add to its historic character. Please see our "Restored Photo" category for enhanced-version photographs.  Thank you for taking this into consideration before making your purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How are your photographs processed?

We pride ourselves on bringing you only the finest quality prints by consistently taking advantage of the ever-growing advances in photo technology.  One of the ways we achieve this is with giclee, a high resolution, high-fidelity process using a performance-specialized large format printer.  Giclee (pronounced zee-CLAY) utilizes inkjet technology, but far more advanced than a standard deskjet.  Among other advantages, giclee employs an ulta-wide color gamut using 11 (or more) specified inks. Originally developed as a proofing system for the traditional lithograph, the superior quality and brilliance of the giclee was soon realized.  Also, giclees are produced digitally, saving generations of the detail-robbing experienced with older methods such as negatives and plates.  This is why giclee, dye sublimation and similar processes have become the gold standard of photographic production in the 21st century, and are employed by the majority of today's reputible photograpic and printhouse developers.

How do I know your image description is accurate?

We strive to make our photo descriptions as accurate as possible. Descriptions are taken directly from the U.S. Library of Congress, National Archives, or other sources as noted. In many cases, these institutions hold the original negatives and state the ascribed notes directly from the original photographer. Therefore, we use these institutions as our standard of authority on description accuracy. We are not responsible for errors and we will not participate in disputes. Should you have a dispute, please contact the sighted source directly.

This listing images provide buyers the opportunity to assess the accuracy of the photo description before finalizing a purchase.  As such, we don't accept returns on the basis of an allegedly inaccurate description.  We encourage you to feel confident in the stated description before ordering.

When can I expect my package?

Items are shipped via USPS First Class mail (2-5 business days).  Our items are made especially for you at the time you place your order, so please allow 1 day for processing (2 for larger orders).  Your package should not be considered untimely unless it has not been received after one full week from your payment date (within the United States).  Please consider weekends and holidays when anticipating your package arrival date as well.

Is your transit packaging secure?

Great care will be taken to ensure that your item arrives in excellent condition. Prints are shipped flat on cardboard and sealed in a water-resistant envelope or, for 11x14 prints and larger, rolled in a crush-resistant tube.  Please note that we pay extra to have orders over $6.00 delivered as PACKAGES, not regular mail.  This means your carrier should deliver your package to your doorstep (not bent or crammed it into your mailbox).  Should you find your package damaged due to this type of handling, please inform your local postmaster.

What is your return policy?

We will happily exchange any defective or problematic merchandise.  However, cash refunds are not allowed, as each item is made-to-order especially for you.  Therefore, please be confident of purchase before placing your order.  We ask that you contact us with any issues before leaving negative feedback, as we are committed to your 100% satisfaction and feel any problem can be easily resolved.
