Antique c.1945 Kodak FS-10-N Sound Kodascope 16mm Movie Projector & Speaker Case
  • A beast of a projector from an old Vermont estate, made circa 1945.  It would have been used to show movies to GI's during R&R during World War Two.  An example is in the Smithsonian Institute.
  • This is a sound projector, meaning it has a built-in tube amplifier, and it connects to the speaker mounted in the large carrying case shown.  There is a speaker wire reel mounted in the case that unreels and connects to the projector so the speaker can be put someplace distant from the projector.
  • The projector has the reel arms and what looks like a small extra bulb mounted in the case lid which doubles as a stand (legs can fold down).  The take-up reel that would have mounted in the lid is missing.  That should be available online if you don't already have one.
  • We have a long-standing rule not to power on anything with tubes in it, unless we know it has been serviced recently.  This is because old dried out capacitors in the amplifier can cause the failure of other more expensive components.  That being the case, we have not tested this projector in any way, and expect that it needs to be checked over by someone who knows how before it can be used.  It is not expected to work in its present state, and it is sold as-is as not working.
  • I did notice that one of the speaker wires connecting the reel to the speaker is detached from the speaker and needs to be reattached.  Because I didn't dismantle the projector, I can't guarantee that something isn't broken or missing and/or needs replacement.  That being said, I don't see anything obvious that is broken or missing.  There is a diagram indicating all the tubes, their types and their locations.  I don't see any missing tubes.
  • The physical condition of the components inside the case looks good, with normal signs of age and previous use.  I think the speaker looks replaced (sometime long ago), and the speaker grill has some oxidation as shown.  The case is fairly worn, with its cloth covering worn and peeling in places, and the still intact leather handle is also worn.
