Welcome to Antiques & Moore!

This listing is for a gorgeous late 19th Century Japanese Imari Arita porcelain cabinet plate. The plate has a fluted/paneled body extending out from the decorative center with the panels widening slightly as they approach the scalloped outer edge. The plates have assorted designs and color combinations in six sections with elaborate gilding throughout. The exterior of the plate has a cobalt blue design that encircles the outer border with a double ring around the outside of the foot ring and a single cobalt ring on the inside with unidentified blue underglaze marks. Although the plate is nicely marked, the mark is unidentifiable. We are certain that this plate dates to the Meiji period (1868-1912) or possibly earlier. Please use your own judgment as to age and maker. The mark also has the appearance of the early Chinese Ming Dynasty (1465-1487) marks which was sometimes done on Japanese Imari items.

Measures 8 1/4" in diameter. Weighs 10.5 ounces.

This nice plate is in very good to excellent Estate condition. There are a couple of very small no-harm nicks on the foot ring otherwise the plate has rich coloration and no scratches or other noted flaws. Please note that we have two that are in great condition being sold separately and we also have two others being sold as a pair although they do have some minor damage/repairs. If you wish to use them as cabinet plates, they display beautifully so please check out our other listings.

Japanese Imari Arita wear was first produced in the early 1600's in the Japanese town of Arita. The ware is generally called Imari as the porcelain was shipped from the nearby port town of Imari. Imari has also become a generic term for porcelains decorated in the colors of cobalt blue, brick red and sometimes green is added and the items are often further embellished with elaborate gilding.
