Used for:

Shoe shanks are curved piece of material inserted on the bottom of the shoe or boot. All footwear made will have either metal, plastic or wooden shanks. The main purpose of the shoe or boot shank is to give extra support to the arch of the foot as well as to make the footwear a sturdy item.

Footwear shank is inserted on the bottom of the footwear between the ball of heel and just below the arch.  A shank is needed to give an extra support to the arch area of the shoe.  Plastic shanks are modern introduction because of lightness and strength. Extremely sturdy, light and flexible.
