ITEM DESCRIPTION:

Here is an Absolutely Gorgeous Vintage Mid Century 1948 Inspirational Color Halftone Lithograph of the Famous Portrait of the Christ Child/Baby Jesus titled, “Light of the World”, (a detail view) done after the 1919 painting of “St. Joseph Holding the Infant Christ”, by the world famous listed painter, illustrator & teacher ‘Charles Bosseron Chambers’ (American, 1883-1964), whose printed signature appears lower right in the image area (tough to see in the darker background).

History of the Painting: “In 1919 Chambers was commissioned to do paintings for the side altars in the newly built St. Ignatius Church in Rogers Park, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. There, Chambers produced a painting of St. Joseph holding the infant Christ. A detail of that painting, the face of four-year-old model Gilbert De Mille, son of the custodian at St. Ignatius School, became the Light of the World. Between 1920 and 1940, millions of copies were sold. The print can be seen over the priest’s desk in the 1948 film The Miracle of the Bells. Chambers also painted the fourteen Stations of the Cross in the Church.” (Source: Wikipedia) Gilbert J. De Mille (1916-1993) passed away on May 13, 1993 and excerpts from a July 15, 2001 interview in the Chicago Tribune with DeMille’s widow Eleanor S. De Mille (1917-2010) at the time and his daughter Darlene A. Baker, stated: “…that he was proud of having posed as the child Jesus, but also a bit embarrassed. "He wasn’t too happy about having to take his clothes off," his widow, Eleanor, recalls. As a toddler and young boy, Gilbert had the run of the school building. "He was the nuns’ pet," Eleanor says. So, when Chambers came to St. Ignatius to paint side altars for the church, one of the sisters suggested Gilbert as a model. Looking at the painting today, it’s easy to see why 4-year-old Gilbert might have found posing uncomfortable. In the arms of St. Joseph, Jesus is naked except for a small piece of cloth loosely draped across his middle. It wouldn’t have been surprising if Gilbert had squirmed around a lot in irritation or protest. For whatever reason, Chambers finished the painting using another boy’s body--a German boy, according to one source; an Italian one, according to another--while retaining DeMille’s face. In a 1941 interview with Liberty magazine, Chambers said that, after he finished the painting of St. Joseph and the child Jesus, he returned to New York. "But the face of that child haunted me. I had to paint it. I had to paint it for its own sake," he said. The result was "Light of the World," the image that made Chambers’ reputation as an artist of religious subjects. One magazine characterized him as the "Painter of Heaven." And, in 1956, Parade magazine included "Light of the World" along with works by Botticelli and Raphael in a list of what it said were the five most beautiful images of the child Jesus ever produced.” (Source: Chicago Tribune) Gilbert J. De Mille is buried in Maryhill Catholic Cemetery and Mausoleum in Niles, IL.

Publisher & Print Info: The publisher info appears printed lower left in the outer margin area just beneath the image as, ‘Copyright Edward Gross Co., NY’, the title appears printed lower middle, and ‘Painted by C. Bosseron Chambers’, appears lower right respectively. ‘© E.G. Co. INC. N.Y.’, appears printed lower right in the image corner just under the artist’s printed signature. The Litho was first published June 21, 1921 and Edward Gross Co. later maintained the copyright and reprinted it again on June 21, 1948, so I believe our piece is the later version from 1948. E.G. Co. also printed it in a few various sizes. The Litho itself is on a nice cream-colored wove paper stock and was drymounted to a very stiff 1/32” mountboard way back in the day in preparation to be framed (but was never framed) and was trimmed back a bit from its original larger size which had slightly wider outer margins (from dupes we’ve had of the piece). The Litho also has a nice clear & lightly textured surface application on it, which was made to look like an oil painting with brushstrokes, similar to the old Raphael Tuck ‘Oilette’ series of postcards and prints.

Size & Condition: The size with small margins is 13-3/4” x 10-5/8”, Image size is 12-1/4” x 9-1/4”. The Litho is in VeryGood Rare+ condition for its vintage age with rich color & tones. This Litho has been in our archive drawer amongst other antique & vintage prints since it was purchased by the Meibohm family and hasn’t seen the light of day in all this time. There is some toning (yellowing) of the clear surface application from age which adds a nice warm tone to the vintage piece. Extremely minimal (only a few) very tiny & slight surface scuff/scratches here & there in the clear surface application which aren’t too noticeable and certainly don’t detract from the piece at all. There is a small dog-ear bend in the lower right outer margin corner which is negligible since the outer margins can easily be matted & framed out. Minimal outer margin edge-wear with some dents & dings here & there—also negligible. crescent-creases scattered here & there in the image area (which aren’t noticeable except from behind); Extremely minimal (only a handful) of small & slight outer margin creases here & there and in a few outer margin corners with a few associated tiny dog-ear bends too—all of which are completely negligible since the outer margins can easily be trimmed off or matted & framed out. This vintage litho has never been framed, which is always more desirable to collectors since it has never been exposed to older non-archival wood/cardboard backing materials, matburn or lightfade and will make the perfect addition to any religious/inspirational art collection.

EMAILING US: eBayers, at all costs, please use eBay's email system only (no outside email addresses) with any questions you may have. eBay's email system GUARANTEES we get your email and more importantly, that you get ours. A lot of servers in the last few years have started using newer SPAM filters, and there have been a lot of problems with GOOD emails not getting through correctly, and being returned as undeliverable. We have had numerous problems in the past communicating with our eBayers outside of eBay because of it.

COLLECTORS & DEALERS: Please DO NOT email us (inside or outside of eBay's email system) with any offers to stop an auction early. It would not be fair to the rest of the eBay Worldwide community if we did that. THE HIGHEST BIDDER -OR- HIGHEST OFFER WINS IT!!!!!

Thank you from the Staff at Meibohm Fine Arts, GOOD LUCK & HAPPY BIDDING!!!
