From the preface: this book has been written primarily tosatisfy the requirements of students offering civics of the subject at theSSC/GCE examinations. We have attempted to make the comprehensive field ofknowledge which the subject of civics implies, intelligible to the student byrelating the citizen to his environment. Our aim has been to show the citizenin his relations with his fellow beings in his neighbourhood, in his countryand in the world; his relationships with fellow beings in the way he earns hisliving and in the way he participates in the process of government. In writingthis book we have also kept in mind the needs of the general reader who wishesto inform himself of what citizenship involves. Our hope is that this book willbe of use both to the student and the general reader. Whether and how far wehave succeeded in what we set out to do, only teaches students and otherreaders can tell. An interesting overview of the culture and society of SriLanka in the 1950s. A useful volume for history, anthropology and geographystudents alike.
