General Information

Tabernaemontana dichotoma is a shrub or a tree usually growing from 2 - 12 metres tall, exceptionally to 20 metres. The bole can be 15 - 30cm in diameter.

The plant is sometimes harvested from the wild for local use as a medicine.

 

Habitat

Montane forest and scrub, at elevations from 750 - 1,500 metres . Moist low country at elevations up to 600 metres.

Medicinal uses

·         The fruits are used in the treatment of ulcers and fistulae.

·         The latex is used to soften and ripen boils and carbuncles.

·         Pounded leaves and bark are externally applied on snake and centipede bites. A preparation of the bark is poulticed on grazed skin as an antiseptic and astringent.

·         Chewing the roots is said to relieve toothache.

Other Uses

The pale-coloured wood is fine-grained and moderately hard .
