THE CACTI OF ARIZONA By Lyman Benson (writer), Lucretia B. Hamilton (artist).

Tucson: The University of Arizona Press, 1981. 3rd Edition 4th Printing. Paperback.

This is a scientific and authoritative study of Arizona cacti but the layman can get a lot out of it. 218 pages, includes quite a few captioned pictures (several in color) and illustrations, also includes quite a few maps of Arizona showing the distribution of the different plants. "The author describes each cactus species in minute detail - by stems, spines, flowers, and fruits, to make possible its immediate identification. Keys are provided for the determination of both the scientific and popular names, and most species are illustrated either by photographs, five in full color, or by line drawings, or both. Dr. Benson, who has collected some 14,600 plant specimens and has studied the distribution of the cacti intensively in the field, provides distribution maps here for sixty of the most important plants. The book also includes a discussion of soil, water, and light requirements for growing cacti."
