DESCRIPTION

Comprising a thorough account of the art of miniature portraits as seen exhibited across Europe, their notable artists and subjects.

With chapters on such artists as Hilliard, Hoskins, Samuel Cooper, Richard Cosway, George Engleheart, and John Smart, as well as more broadly, painters from the Royal Academy and foreign painters in the U.S, France, Italy, Sweden and Russia.

Containing two appendices, on the extracts from Norgate's manuscript in the Bodleian Library, and on extracts from King's manuscript in the British Museum entitled 'Miniatura'.

Written by George Charles Williamson (1858-1942), a British art historian and antiquarian. He was a prolific writer on guides, in particular on portrait miniatures, as well as compiling numerous catalogues and biographies of artists.

A limited edition, with five hundred and twenty copies produced, of which five hundred and ten were released for sale.

Volume I is illustrated with fifty-nine plates, and Volume II with fifty-eight. Collated, complete.

A truly splendid work of art history.


CONDITION

In the publisher's original full cloth binding. Externally generally smart, with a little bumping to the extremities and a few marks to the spines. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, and uncut.
