Original Gouache on paper by Jean René Joseph Gossein (1890-1971). This is one of a number of hand painted designs for wallpaper, linoleum, carpets and rugs that I have available from the Gossein Brothers archive. Jean Gossein was born in Sangatte, Pas-de-Calais in 1890. He moved to England to work as a French lace maker, first in Derbyshire, before establishing his own company in Nottingham.

I will be listing a number of the original paintings individually. They are beautiful examples of the bold and exotic designs of this era (c1930s), all signed and numbered by Jean Gossein.  Several bear a stamp mark verso: ‘Gossein Bros, High Pavement, Nottingham.’

Wallpaper design in gouache on thin, brown coloured paper. Signed and numbered lower right '2912'. Vertical and horizontal pattern repeat. The paper in very reasonable condition with good unframed colour to the image. There is light handling/creases to the paper and slight rippling to the left and right margins.

Painted image measures 30.5cm x 30.5cm. Total paper size 38.6cm x 38.6cm.
