DESCRIPTION

An important collection complete in six volumes of Auguste Racinet's monumental work on the history of clothing. An early edition in the original French.

Originally published in France between 1876 and 1888, it was consolidated in 1888 in six volumes with five hundred stunning plates: three hundred in colour, gold and silver, and two hundred in camaïeu.

Looking at the world history of costume, dress, and style from antiquity through to the nineteenth century. A unique work in its scope and detail, important in the history of French typography, especially in the use of chromolithographic technique which granted these plates some bright, impressive colouring.

This remarkable work explores the history of fashion around the world and through the ages; it was considered one of the most complete and extensive studies of clothing ever to be published.

With notes, a general introduction, glossary and index.

Collated, with twelve plates to volume I, eighty eight to volume II, ninety five to volume III, ninety seven to volume IV, ninety four to volume V, and ninety seven to volume VI (double-sheet plates are counted as one).

CONDITION

In a half calf binding over marbled boards and endpapers. Externally sound with some shelf wear and rubbing to the leather as well as some scuffing. With a slight tear to the joints of the occasional volume, particularly to Volume II, III, and VI, which has suffered a slight loss to the head of the spine. Internally, the hinges to volume VI are slightly loose, otherwise the binding is firm throughout to each volume. The pages are bright and clean with only the odd minor spotting to the occasional gutter and the occasional faint handling mark to the leaves. Some leaves to each volume are left unopened. Illustrated with five hundred stunning plates: five hundred in colour, gold and silver, and two hundred in camaïeu. Collated, with twelve plates to volume I, eighty eight to volume II, ninety five to volume III, ninety seven to volume IV, ninety four to volume V, and ninety seven to volume VI (double-sheet plates are counted as one).
