Sebastian Mölleken’s VISIT project was published as the “Open-Cast Mine” image series by Verlag Kettler. The people on whom Mölleken trained his camera’s eye mostly live under special conditions at special places. The photographer is interested in the deep connection between man and landscape. Mölleken’s images of open-cast mining taken in the Garzweiler mining region skew perceptions of time and size, demonstrating how the landscape influences the people who live on it, and vice-versa. It would have been too facile for Mölleken to simply demonstrate the old world sacrificed in the name of open-cast mining.
